 Free family bike rides for little explorers
The upcoming Wokingham Bikeathon on Sunday 28 June, which we support, includes free family rides that are perfect for smaller legs.
Alongside the regular Bikeathon challenge, Kidical Mass organisers will be leading groups on routes of 1 mile (balance bikes), 2.5 miles and 4 miles.
You can meet on the Bikeathon field at Cantley Park for 10am, with no need to book in advance, and all types of bikes and accessories are welcome.
The ride will be fully led and marshalled, though parents and carers remain responsible for their children at all times.
Kidical Mass host family-friendly rides in Wokingham and Reading throughout the year and also advocate for improved cycling infrastructure.
We share this aim and are now building an active travel route from Woodley to Reading as part of a wider long-term vision for the borough.
 Challenges for more experienced riders too
The Wokingham Bikeathon is a popular, volunteer-run community event offering a range of routes and with proceeds going to good causes.
This year, our My Journey Wokingham team will be hosting their first Wokingham Cycle Festival as part of the wide range of the attractions on the event field.
There'll be displays by the Fusion Extreme BMX stunt team, a range of interactive activities and information about sustainable travel in Wokingham Borough.
The Bikeathon runs from 8am to 2pm, with half-hourly stunt displays from 10am.
There'll also be family-friendly activities as part of our rEVolution electric vehicle and e-bike event, which takes place on Elms Field in Wokingham on Saturday 4 July. Pop over and chat with dealers and experts to find out all you need to know about EV ownership and maintenance.
 New 30mph proposals in pipeline for villages
As part of our ongoing efforts to keep the borough's roads safe, we're proposing to reduce the speed limit to 30mph on sections of:
- Biggs Lane, Arborfield
- Park Lane, Finchampstead
- Stanlake Lane, Twyford
- Waltham Road, Twyford
- New Road, Twyford
We believe these changes will improve safety in areas where people live and on routes that many children use to get to school.
We're holding a statutory consultation as part of the legal process to bring these new limits into force, known as a Traffic Regulation Order.
You've got until Thursday 2 July to share your views, and all feedback will be carefully considered before we make any final decision.
We're consulting until next Thursday (18 June) on plans for 30mph limits at Shepherd's Hill roundabout between Woodley and Sonning.
 Looking ahead to create a safer network
Earlier this year, we adopted a speed limit policy to help us make the roads safer, especially in areas where pedestrians, cyclists and children are at risk.
We then asked you to tell us which locations you think should be prioritised for speed limit reductions as part of our Safer Streets programme.
We're reviewing your suggestions, with input from town and parish councils, and will be letting you know more about the next steps soon.
Speed is the biggest contributor to road deaths and was a concern when we consulted on our long-term transport policies, so we're listening and acting.
If you're going to a party this summer, you may be tempted to drive home after drinking - but the risks just aren't worth it. Plan your journey in advance and find an alternative to driving, or make sure you have none for the road.
 Planned road closures scaled back after review
To support the restoration of Heath Lake, Thames Water will have temporary traffic lights on New Wokingham Road in Crowthorne this summer.
They'll be in place near Merryman Drive from Monday 29 June until Friday 28 August, with a single weekend closure for materials to be lifted in by crane.
This will take place from 8am on Saturday 11 July until 5pm on Sunday 12 July.
A full closure of several months was initially proposed, but we worked with Thames Water to review their programme and encourage a less disruptive approach.
We also postponed the temporary lights until after we expected SGN's closure for important gas pipe upgrades on Lower Wokingham Road to finish.
These finished more than two weeks ahead of schedule and the road has reopened.
 Road improvements postponed due to rain
Our annual roads and footways maintenance is now under way, with streets across the borough being resurfaced or treated to improve your journeys.
Some works advertised on our live listings have already been postponed due to upcoming rain, which is always a risk, so check again for the new dates.
Keep an eye on the advance warnings at the roadside, as we'll update these too.
If your street is due for treatment at some point in the future, make sure you check the listings nearer the time as road maintenance depends on the weather.
A section of Barkham Road near Wokingham will be closed overnight (7pm to 6am) from next Tuesday to Saturday (16 to 20 June) while we patch up the carriageway. These works were delayed due to South East Water's emergency repairs further up Barkham Road, which have now finished.
 How you helped us plan bus improvements
More than 1,800 people helped to shape the improvements we're making to our bus network - and now you can see how your feedback made a difference.
Our consultation summary shows 71 per cent of respondents were already satisfied with local services, which is a great start and reflects the work we've carried out with operators and some Government funding in recent years.
However, they identified areas for improvement including new routes, more frequent services and better coverage, and we hope to provide these through our upcoming tenders for new contracts.
Encouraging and enabling use of public transport is key to our efforts to address the root cause of congestion, along with promoting walking and cycling.
These modes of travel are also better for the environment as they reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, which contribute to climate change.
As well as improving local buses, we've agreed significant extra investment in community transport services for those with additional needs. We'll continue to update you on the tender process as it moves forward later in the year.

Temporary lights - Old Bath Road
Monday 15 to Friday 19 June, 9am to 3pm
There'll be two-way lights between Lime Tree Close and Park Lane while we carry out drainage works to protect the road from flooding.
Earley
Temporary lights - Elm Road
Thursday 18 to Monday 22 June
There'll be two-way lights near the roundabout with Elm Lane while SSE fix an electrical fault.
Wokingham
Road closure - Norreys Avenue
Monday 15 June, 9.30am to 3pm
The road will be closed between Ashridge Road and Wiltshire Road while BT replace a damaged telegraph pole.
