Thrills and stunts at summer cycle festival
Our My Journey active travel team will be holding their cycle festival at the Wokingham Bikeathon on Sunday, 28 June.
There are lots of activities planned for the event including:
- BMX stunt team displays from Fusion Extreme (above)
- Learn to Ride and Balance Bike activities
- Dr Bike offering FREE bike checks
- Have a go on our prize spinning wheel and smoothie bike
- Active and sustainable travel advice
The Wokingham Bikeathon takes place at Cantley Park, with a choice of four routes to suit all abilities and ages: 17 miles, 25 miles, 36 miles or 50 miles.
There's drink stops and toilets on all routes and you can bring your family or ride with friends. There'll also be refreshments and attractions on the event field.
Learn to get hands-on with bike maintenance
A puncture doesn't have to stop you in your tracks! Our introductory bike maintenance course is the perfect way to build your confidence and keep you riding.
Just bring a clean bike and an inner tube, and our expert instructor will guide you through the basics. You’ll learn how to check your bike for safety, fix a puncture, and clean and lubricate key parts to keep everything running smoothly.
There’s also plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get tailored advice on your own bike. Courses can be booked at the following venues:
This is a great way to gain confidence, save money on simple repairs, and enjoy your rides with peace of mind.
Walking group trial could become regular fixture
We've conducted a six-week trial of Nordic walking at Langley Mead in Shinfield, Hazebrouck Meadows in Arborfield and Dinton Pastures Country Park near Hurst.
It's been well received with great feedback from participants, who say they've seen the physical and mental benefits and feel more confident enjoying regular activity.
We'd like to set up a regular Nordic walking group and have asked people who attended our trial for their ideas. If you'd like to join in, please get in touch with us.
Thames Valley Police will be outside Ryeish Green Leisure Centre carrying out free bike security marking on Saturday, 30 May (10am to 12pm). It’s a quick, effective way to keep your bike safer and give you peace of mind.
Free event to spark electric rEVolution
Wokingham will host a celebration of greener travel as the rEVolution Electric Vehicle and E-bike event comes to Elms Field on Saturday 4 July, from 10am to 2pm.
The free drop-in will allow visitors to explore a range of electric vehicles, including Ford, Tesla and Citroën models, and speak with dealers, suppliers and experts about charging, maintenance and Government incentives.
Cycling fans can enjoy test rides on e-bikes or benefit from a free Dr Bike clinic (non-electric bikes only) offering servicing and advice.
Visitors can also learn about My Journey’s electric cargo bike hire scheme and take a look at an electric bus provided by Reading Buses.
With an interactive EV and E-bike family trail adding to the experience, the event promises to be both informative and fun.
Electric vehicle ownership is set for a huge increase in years to come, so our EV charging strategy aims to provide one charge point for every 22 vehicles.
Stepping up for Walk to School Week
Primary schools across the borough took great strides towards healthier lifestyles by taking part in Walk to School Week.
Pupils embraced walking, cycling and wheeling while our My Journey team presented fun assemblies highlighting the benefits of leaving the car at home.
Schools tracked pupils’ journeys using wall charts and stickers, with activity booklets helping to keep the momentum going beyond the week itself.
And the excitement isn’t over yet - after half-term, a trophy will be awarded to the school with the highest level of active travel participation.
Efforts to promote healthy travel recognised nationally
Four schools have earned accreditation for their school travel plans under the Modeshift STARS scheme:
-
Shinfield Infant and Nursery School (Good)
-
Westende Junior School, Wokingham (Excellent)
-
Nine Mile Ride Primary School, Finchampstead (Good)
-
Crosfields School, Shinfield (Approved)
Each has worked hard to encourage active travel, running initiatives to get more pupils walking, cycling or scooting in.
Shinfield Infant School hosted a Dr Bike mechanic session and took pupils on a walking trip around the area as part of the curriculum.
Nine Mile Ride Primary School held a special Earth Day assembly and have tasked pupils with assessing the roads in the area.
Westende Junior School completed almost 70 initiatives including a Year 6 workshop encouraging pupils to explore public transport. Pupils across the school also designed an anti-idling banner and put it up outside the gate.
Crosfields School runs a regular 'Walk It Wednesday' and has an app where parents can arrange to lift share.
Schools to take action for Clean Air Day
Our primary schools are gearing up for Clean Air Day on 18 June, with an exciting programme of activities run by our My Journey team and Volker Highways.
Pupils will take part in interactive assemblies and hands-on sessions to learn about air pollution and the impact of vehicle emissions on their health and environment.
A borough-wide anti-idling competition is also launching, inviting children to design bold posters encouraging drivers to switch off engines outside schools.
Winning designs will be turned into professional banners and displayed at school gates, helping spread the message to the wider community.
There’s still time for pupils to get involved in our Earth Day competition! Just design a futuristic, eco-friendly mode of transport that improves air quality, complete with a clearly labelled drawing. Go Ape vouchers will be awarded to winners and runners-up, so send your entries to us by Friday, 29 May.
All aboard for better bus services
We're poised to invest an extra £500,000 a year in the borough's bus and community transport services as we continue supporting their growth.
Our proposals, to be discussed at a meeting of our decision-making executive today (28 May), include:
- extending the Twyford to Wokingham service to include Coppid Beech, while extending operating hours to cover rail commuters
- a morning and evening express link from Coppid Beech to Twyford station
- a new link between housing at North Wokingham and the town centre
- a new link between Woodley, Winnersh and Wokingham town
- a new link between Lower Earley and Wokingham town
We're also looking to invest in the equivalent of three new vehicles for our community transport service, which supports residents who cannot access local buses. This would more than double our funding in this area.
In 2025/26, local trips starting in the borough grew by 4 per cent to 2.6 million and we want this to grow to 4.4 million by 2039/40.
