Next Monday (1 June) we’ll start the borough’s new waste collection contract with Biffa.
Most residents won’t notice the difference in their collections but here's how you can help make the switch go smoothly.
While we switch our contractor, some online waste systems will be down on Saturday 30 May and Sunday 31 May.

Impact on your collection days
Collection days for most properties will be the same as they are now, with rubbish collected from a black bin one week and recycling from green bags on the other week.
Food waste will continue to be collected weekly.
You can still look up when your next collection will be, and what it will be, on our website.

Put your containers out early
We’ve worked with Biffa to make collections more efficient.
If you have a ‘usual’ time your waste gets picked up this may be different after 1 June.
Put your containers out by 6.30am or the night before.
This will help collections run smoothly as the new contractor starts and will make sure your waste and recycling gets collected.
It’s also a good time to make sure your containers are labelled with your property number to help crews too.
Reporting missed collections
You'll be able to report missed collections at any time on day of collection, or the following working day, as we'll now get real-time information as your waste is collected.
If you report it before the crew have been, you will get a message advising the crew haven't completed your street yet. You can report missed collections on our website.

Recycle as much as possible
Recycle as much as possible in your green recycling bags and food waste bin.
Remember you can put out as many recycling bags as you can fill with items we collect at the kerbside. Collect more bags from a community hub near you.
The food is recycled into electricity and fertiliser at the anaerobic digestion plant in South Oxfordshire. Watch the video of what happens once your food waste is collected.

Garden waste sack collections need to be booked
Once your sack is full, book online and you’ll be able to put it out on your booked date.
You’ll be able to book a collection on our website and booking will go live from 1 June when the new contract starts.
Residents have been notified of this when buying garden waste sacks since March.
This means crews will know which houses to collect from in advance, helping us to:
- Reduce missed collections
- Improve the efficiency of collection rounds
- Communicate better between residents, collection crews and customer services
- Residents who can’t book online can call to arrange a collection
Sacks that have not been booked for a collection will not be collected. Residents with a garden waste bin subscription do not need to book.
Other options

New fleet and technology to improve your services
We’re using more than 30 new vehicles across our new waste collection and street cleansing contract.
The contract will include new vehicles with advanced in-cab technology which many other local authorities use.
This will allow a more effective and efficient operation which will improve communications and service delivery for residents.
A key part of this contract is supporting carbon reduction and smaller electric vehicles will be integral to the services.
The larger refuse collection vehicles will be more fuel efficient than the current vehicles and both these advancements directly contribute to our climate emergency goals.
The waste collection vehicles include six named by residents as part of a competition run earlier this year, with vehicles also taken to local schools to support food waste recycling education sessions for students.
