How to recycle your Christmas tree
If you’re looking to recycle your real Christmas tree now the festive period is over you can:
Remember to check the tree is completely free of lights, tinsel and any other decorations.
Replant for next year
If your Christmas tree still has its roots, you can plant it outdoors.
Choose a cool, sheltered site with well‑drained soil and enough room for future growth. Acclimatise the tree for a week in a garage or porch so it can adjust from indoor warmth to outdoor temperatures.
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its height. Position the tree with the roots level with the soil surface, backfill with the loosened soil and water thoroughly.
Add mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk and stake in windy spots, making sure to water during dry spells.
Our next Warm Homes session is running at Twyford Library on Friday (9 January) from 10am to 12 noon. Get tips on keeping your home warm and reducing your energy costs.
