Christmas is coming, so plan around closures
Many of our communities are gearing up to celebrate the festive season, so make sure you're ready if you're going to be in the area.
Peach Street, Denmark Street and Rose Street in Wokingham will be closed throughout Sunday 30 November for the Lions Club's Wokingham Winter Carnival. Parking is limited, so consider coming by bus.
London Road in Twyford will be shut from the crossroads to Jubilee Corner on the evening of Friday 5 December for the Twyford Together Christmas Fayre.
On Sunday 7 December, the Woodley Christmas Extravaganza takes place at Woodley precinct from 10am to 3pm.
The Reading Christian Motorcyclists' annual Reading Toy Run takes place on the same day, running from Thames Valley Science Park in Shinfield to High Close School in Wokingham.
It will go via the Eastern Relief Road, Shinfield Road, Lower Earley Way and Reading Road, with rolling closures from 1pm.
The railway line between Bracknell and Reading, including Wokingham, Winnersh, Winnersh Triangle and Earley, will be closed all day on Sunday 30 November due to maintainance work. All South Western Railway and Great Western Railway services will be replaced by buses.
Free festive buses to be offered across borough
We're offering free single fares on all local bus journeys that start in Wokingham Borough on the weekends running up to Christmas.
The offer applies on:
- Sunday 30 November (Wokingham Winter Carnival)
- Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December (Woodley Christmas Extravaganza)
- Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December
- Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 December
We know it's an expensive time and we're happy to help reduce your travel costs, whether you're doing some festive shopping or just visiting friends and family.
The free buses coincide with several of our Christmas events - some are already sold out, but worth considering if you've got a ticket!
The offer still applies if you travel outside the borough but if you go somewhere that isn't running a similar offer, you'll need to pay for your return journey.
It also doesn't apply to services like park and rides or football shuttles.
As usual, it's funded by the Government through our Bus Service Improvement Plan, with similar offers in neighbouring boroughs.
In previous years, we funded free Christmas bus travel on Saturdays, with additional discounts only on specific routes serving festive community events.

New bus route expands Twyford to Reading options
On Monday, Reading Buses launched their new route 12 between Twyford and central Reading, via Shepherds Hill and London Road.
For the first two weeks until Saturday, 15 November, there's an introductory special ticket price of £1.50 for a single and £2.30 for a return.
The buses will run every 30 minutes between 9am and 2.30pm (weekdays) and between 9am and 5pm (Saturdays) with a 20 to 30 minute journey time.
Outside those times, Thames Valley Buses also run the 128 and 129 services and, additionally, the 127 on Saturdays.
You can also travel from Twyford to Reading on Carousel's 850 service or take the train from the station, which is served by Thames Valley Buses' 128 service.
Taking the bus is much healthier and better for the environment than driving, so make the most of the offer. Several routes have improved this year, some with our support - and bus travel means you don't pay for parking!
More time needed to look into A33 damage
A 1km stretch of the northbound nearside lane on the A33 Swallowfield bypass remains closed due to a crack along the carriageway.
We’ve inspected this section and concluded it’s a serious safety hazard though we aren’t yet sure what’s causing it.
The lane, which includes both 40mph and 70mph speed limits, will remain closed for now to allow us to explore a feasible temporary solution.
We now need to plan a more detailed investigation of the road and its supporting embankment.
We’ll have a better idea of what’s happening next, and how long it’ll take, after further discussion with our ground engineering experts.
We’re sorry we can’t give more conclusive answers at this stage but we’ll let you know more as soon as we do.
We've been shortlisted for an award for the 44 public chargepoints we installed in late 2023, and we're planning hundreds more as part of a wider strategy. All works are funded by various Department for Transport schemes.
Next steps on Woodley to Reading route coming soon
We've finished our survey on proposals for a 20mph speed limit on several streets in the Woodley area, as part of a new active travel link to Palmer Park in Reading.
We're looking through your responses now and putting together a programme for the work, which we expect to start early in 2026 and run for much of the year.
This will be disruptive at times, but we'll keep you posted throughout and hope to announce more details about the first steps next month.
The project will connect Woodley precinct to Palmer Park via Woodlands Avenue, Church Road, Palmerstone Road and Culver Lane.
It's been widely consulted on and revised to reflect people's feedback, and will be funded through the Government's Active Travel Fund.
This route is part of a long-term, borough-wide vision outlined in our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). All schemes set out in the plan are subject to external funding and further consultation.
