Our plan for kerbside glass collections
You may have heard about the Government’s Simpler Recycling initiative, which aims to standardise kerbside collections by April 2026. In Wokingham Borough, glass is the only material we don’t currently collect at the kerbside.
We’re calling for fairer funding, as government proposals could see nearly £50 million of local council tax redistributed elsewhere over the next three years.
Thanks to our residents, 84 per cent of glass is already recycled via bottle banks.
We’re currently proposing to start monthly kerbside glass collections in February 2027.
New zebra crossings across the borough
We’re going to install zebra crossings at two locations in Wokingham town this summer.
Work on one crossing at Warren House Road has just finished, while another is under construction on Wiltshire Road until 28 August.
We’re also planning a third crossing on Bearwood Road in Winnersh, which will coincide with SGN upgrade work to minimise disruption.
As part of this, we’ll reduce the speed limit between Harvest Drive and Alder Mews from 40mph to 30mph to improve pedestrian safety.
How and when we’ll act on concerns
We receive a huge volume of road safety concerns and can’t act on them all, though we’ll do so where there’s clear evidence of a need and a chance to make a real, lasting difference.
It takes well over a year to approve and implement a request because of the design process and legal approvals as well as funding, which is becoming increasingly limited.
Meet Mary Poppins at summer fun day

 Routine vaccination catch up
We’re encouraging parents to check their child’s vaccination record and make sure they’ve had all their routine jabs to protect them from illnesses like measles.
Measles spreads easily and can lead to serious complications. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a rise in cases in England, especially among children under 10. With many families travelling over the summer, there’s a risk that infections could spread further when schools return.
The NHS offers the MMR vaccine free to all children with one dose at 12 months and another at 3 years 4 months.
If you’re not sure whether your child is up to date, check their personal health record (red book).
If they’ve missed any vaccines, contact your GP surgery or the Berkshire School-aged Immunisation Team to arrange an appointment.
A amber heat-health alert has been issued for the South East, including Wokingham Borough.
Although the sunny weather brings the perfect summer vibe, use these tips to beat the heat and stay well.
