Recycling and waste in warm weather
In this one-off special of Environment News, we're sharing details about earlier bin collections taking place on the hottest days together with some top tips.
Earlier bin collections - key dates
To avoid the hottest part of the day, your collections will begin one hour earlier at 5.30am on the following dates this week and next.
- Thursday 10 July
- Friday 11 July
- Monday 14 July
This is something we do for our waste and recycling crews to help them avoid the hottest parts of the day so there may be more earlier collections to come during the summer. Follow us on social media where we share the latest updates.
Help the teams by ensuring your bins are ready for collection on time.
What can you do to help?
Help our teams by ensuring your bins are ready for collection on time.
- Put your bins out the night before collection day
- Ensure all containers are clearly visible and accessible by 5:30am
- Seal food waste in bags and keep the lid closed to reduce smells and deter pests
 Keep it clean and pest-free
Warm weather can lead to unpleasant smells and attract flies or other pests. Here are a few simple tips to keep your bins fresh:
- Rinse out food and drink containers before recycling
- Wrap food waste in newspaper or compostable liners
- Keep bin lids closed at all times. Pull up the handle on food bins to lock the lid
- Store bins in shaded areas if possible
