Sand martins welcome at Lavell's Nature Reserve
Our Countryside Team and volunteers have been working hard to welcome sand martins at Lavell's Local Nature Reserve, opposite the Activity Centre at Dinton Pastures.
At Lavells Lake, there is a breeze block wall built for sand martins which has more than 150 holes, leading to small chambers filled with sand. These mimic the traditional sandy cliff sites the birds would normally use to build their nests on.
Sand martins are the smallest European hirundines (a collective name for martins and swallows) and have dark brown upper bodies and are social birds who like to breed in colonies. They are agile fliers and feed mainly over water, making Dinton Pastures an ideal place to nest and feed.
Every year, before the sand martins return in April, our Countryside Team and volunteers change over the sands in preparation for our African visitors who can travel up to 4,000Km to Lavells Lake. We expect up to 60 of our nest holes in the wall to be occupied this season with sand martins before they migrate to Africa for the winter.
Find out more about sand martins by visiting the RSPB website.

 Free arts and culture showcase
Dinton Pastures will be transformed to host Wokingham Borough’s Forest of Imagination in May, in a first-of-its-kind event in the Thames Valley.
Parts of the park will be transformed with new sensory installations co-created by professional artists and schools, incorporating ideas from local community groups.
Residents will be invited to deepen their connection with nature, through participatory activities, performances and digital experiences.
Fourteen participating schools will join for sessions on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 May, before the showcase weekend opens for all on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May.
Watch the film last year’s event in Bath to get an idea of what Forest of Imagination is like.
A list of the unique installations can be found on our website. The project is possible thanks to funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Volunteer opportunities
We're looking for volunteers to help at this event over the weekend of Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 May from 9.30am to 5pm. It is flexible and you can volunteer times to suit you.
If you would like to help guide visitors around the country park, please contact Gemma Wilford, Sales & Events Manager at Dinton Pastures, by sending an email.
