Link road agreed to serve planned new housing
We've agreed to allow part of Waterloo Road in South Wokingham to be diverted, to enable access to the new homes which are going to be built in this area.
Works on this section will be carried out by the housing developers and are separate from our South Wokingham Distributor Road project.
Waterloo Road will be diverted further to the north between the roundabout at William Heelas Way and the junction with Peacock Lane.
This new section will have bus stops, traffic calming measures and pedestrian and cycle crossings. There'll be new side junctions to access new housing, with pedestrians and cyclists given priority when crossing.
Further details are to be confirmed through legal agreements and additional planning applications.
The existing road is narrow, with no footpaths and lined with hedges and ditches, and couldn't be upgraded without harming the local environment. It'll stay open as a quiet pedestrian and cycle route, providing access to a small number of homes.
Don't miss updates as distributor road gets under way
While the link road above isn't one of our projects, the South Wokingham Distributor Road will also allow access to new housing in the area.
The works, in partnership with Balfour Beatty, include closures at the junction of Molly Millars Lane and Finchampstead Road from mid-summer until early 2026.
We'll be announcing full details very soon, so make sure you've signed up to our South Wokingham community newsletter.
And if you missed it, take a look at our detailed preview of the finished scheme, plus an overview of how we're offsetting its impact on the local environment.
Road to close overnight for resurfacing works
Overnight resurfacing is taking place in Shinfield tonight and tomorrow night (13 and 14 March).
Sections of the B3270, between the M4 junction 11 interchange and A327 Shinfield Road, will have the surface removed and replaced.
A road closure will be in place from 8pm to 6am each night for this work to take place. Access will be maintained for residents and there will be a signed diversion.
The diversion route will run via the A327 Shinfield Road, Whitley Wood Road, Whitley Wood Lane and the B3031 Basingstoke Road.
Making tough decisions on where to repair
Like other councils, we can't resurface every road and have to focus our limited resources on the areas that need attention the most.
However, we will always meet our statutory duties and there are other treatments that can extend the life of a road without fully resurfacing it.
You can find out more about how we maintain the borough's roads and footways, and how we decide what to prioritise, on our website.

Overnight closures as M4 improvements wrap up
There'll be overnight closures and diversions on the M4, between junctions 10 (Winnersh) and 12 (Theale), at the end of the month.
This is while National Highways removes lane closures after installing more emergency refuge areas. Works will take place as follows:
-
28 March 2025 - overnight westbound (towards Wales) closure
-
29 March 2025 - overnight eastbound (towards London) closure
-
30 March 2025 - overnight westbound (towards Wales) closure
-
31 March 2025 - overnight eastbound (towards London) closure
You can see the westbound and eastbound diversion routes on a map.
Once traffic management is removed, all four lanes will be running and temporary speed limits will be lifted. All new emergency areas will be available immediately.
More than 150 emergency areas are being added to motorways across the country following the findings of a Government report.
Reading Buses, who run many of the routes serving Wokingham Borough, have announced their star performers for 2025. Carousel Buses, who cover the north of the borough, are running a customer survey to help improve services.

Sign up for alerts on disruptive railway works
If you live near a railway line, you can sign up for a new digital notification system for alerts about upcoming works.
The free service, launched by Network Rail, is open to anyone who lives within 500m a railway line on the Wessex route - which includes all of Wokingham Borough.
It covers everything from long-term planned maintenance to short notice emergency works, especially anything that might cause a disturbance.
This is in addition to the activities which Network Rail already carries out to advertise works, and is part of a national initiative to keep people informed.
It reduces how many paper letters are sent, which is better for the environment and saves money for investment elsewhere on the railways.
