Wokingham Borough Adult Education
This is the last chance to apply for some of our free maths courses aimed at parents, carers, grandparents or anyone that works alongside children. Our Learn with Lego course is a fantastic insight into ways of incorporating maths in everyday play.
We are offering new short free courses this month - Money Matters, the UK Pay System and Confidence in Applying for Jobs - both run on Zoom and in the evenings. We are also running the same courses this month specifically for young people aged 15 to 21 years who have moved to the UK from Hong Kong, Ukraine or Afghanistan.

Help with your Maths
- 11 March, Tuesday 7.30pm to 8.30pm, online via Zoom

Refresh basic maths skills used in everyday life and work including fractions, percentages, ratios, probability and lots more. The course will help you assess your current skill level and identify areas you can improve your maths skills further.
After an initial tutor led interactive session, you’ll have access to an online course which you can work through at your own pace and focus on areas you’d like to improve. A follow up session with a tutor is available for those who would like one.
Building Resilience in your Child

Aimed at parents of primary aged children, this course looks at building resilience in children and helping them deal with their emotions. Help your child recognise, understand and accept feelings and to express them in appropriate ways. Learn to help your child manage negative feelings and have a positive outlook.

Discover how to utilise Lego with your children, from nursery to primary school age, for activities beyond construction. This course is designed to assist parents in exploring fundamental maths concepts such as counting, measuring, symmetry, and patterns, all linked to reception, KS1 and KS2 curriculum.

Confidence in Applying for Jobs and Improving Interview Techniques

Digital Skills for Beginners

Learn how to use a laptop, including accessing the internet and using email. Build confidence in your digital skills in a supportive environment. Suitable for complete beginners. There are also optional drop in sessions available as a follow on from this course for ongoing digital skills learning.
Managing Child Anxiety

Looking for support to maximise nutrition in lunchboxes whilst looking at creative ideas for tasty and healthy lunch options. The course will also consider strategies for encouraging reluctant eaters.

Money Matters - the UK Pay System

New to working and earning in the UK? This course looks at how workers are paid and explains the terms found on a pay slip, the legal pay rules, and what can be deducted from your wages such as Income Tax and National Insurance.

Introduction to KS2 Maths
Gain confidence in supporting your child with their maths learning in KS2 (Year 3 to Year 6). Become familiar with the topics, vocabulary and key skills introduced. This course includes activities, resources and tips to support children's learning at home.
Supporting Students at Exam Time

Aimed at parents and carers of students who are revising for their GCSE or A Level exams this year, the course looks at how you can help them prepare for their exams. The course discusses effective revision techniques as well as creating a supportive environment and addressing barriers to revision, strategies for time management, keeping motivated and managing anxiety.

Build your Confidence to Get into Work or Volunteering

Getting into work or volunteering after a break for any reason, or for the first time in a new country, can be daunting. This course will help you to identify all the strengths and qualities you have that employers want and look at ways to expand your experience through volunteering or further learning while building your confidence to take the next steps. This is an intensive course run over 8 days.
Introduction to Working in Care or the NHS

Interested in working in the NHS or in the care sector? This course will look at different roles available and explore ways of gaining transferable skills or experience to start working in these sectors.
Understanding Anxiety in Teenagers

Aimed at parents of secondary school pupils, this course looks at how anxiety presents in teenagers, and techniques that can be used to reduce its impact. The course aims to help you develop a selection of coping strategies as well as giving you a better understanding of the causes of teenage anxiety and ways of building resilience.
Eligibility and costs

To be eligible for Adult Education courses, you need to:
Live or work within the Wokingham Borough, or have a child attending a Wokingham school,
- AND be over 19 years old (as of 31st August 2024)
- AND be a UK or Irish citizen or a non-UK national with permission to live in the UK and have ordinarily been resident in the UK for at least 3 years
All Ukrainian adults and their family members supported through the Ukraine Family Scheme and Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme are immediately eligible for courses and are exempt from the 3-year residency requirement.
Learners with a BN(O) visa are eligible to apply for Community Learning courses immediately.
There are a number of other exemptions including those for some asylum seekers or refugees. Please email us or call 0118 974 3797 if you wish to discuss any exemptions further.
Some courses are free and those courses that have a cost are free for anyone who is in receipt of Universal Credit (work related), Employment Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance, or are on low income (under £22,000). Please contact us with any queries around costs.
