Two new retailers come to Bush Walk
Two new retailers will be opening their doors at Bush Walk in Wokingham this month.
Cycling shop De Novo Velo opened this weekend, while Art K Wokingham will be opening next week. Both are leasing their units from us.
Resident Max Knott will be running the family bike shop, which will sell parts, children’s bicycles, offer maintenance and more.
Samantha Pogson will be running Art K, a space for art classes, workshops, parties and more. Bookings are open from 25 February, while there will be an open day on Saturday (22 February) if you want to drop in and find mind out.
Community centre could be open by spring
A new community centre at Matthewsgreen in North Wokingham is another step closer to opening to the public.
We’ve agreed in principle to lease the centre, next to St Cecilia’s Primary School on Queen’s Road, to Reading Repertory Theatre.
This follows a selection process in which community groups were invited to express an interest in running it and submit a bid.
We considered lots of things when looking at bids, including whether they met the requirements of the borough’s Community Vision.
It’s now hoped that the centre could open in spring this year. It will be available for hire by other community groups. Like much of North Wokingham’s community infrastructure, the centre was funded by the contributions that developers building new homes in this area are required to pay.
Major planting projects improve wildlife conditions
We will soon start two major planting projects, which will see around 11 hectares of our land in Barkham and Ashridge become more wildlife friendly.
These projects will involve planting thousands of trees, including bell heather, elder, European blueberry, common alder, aspen and many more, at both locations before the end of this planting season in March.
Last year’s planting season saw us plant more than 6,200 trees across the borough, including at schools, community spaces and our own land.
More than 40 per cent of these trees were part of our Biodiversity Net Gain project at Ashenbury Park in Woodley, a pilot scheme to enrich the site's natural habitats and make it more welcoming to wildlife.
We planted a diverse range of native species, such as beech, silver birch, blackthorn, dog rose, hazel, spindleberry, wild cherry and more.
Display screens return after bus shelter upgrades
We’ve reinstalled electronic departure boards at seven bus shelters across the borough that were recently upgraded.
The displays were temporarily removed while the shelters, which were old and in poor condition, were replaced by new, modern environmentally friendly ones.
A total of 20 bus shelters were improved and some will benefit from measures like a "green" planted roof, a solar roof or an electronic advertising screen.
They're managed by an outside company, which saves us money on maintenance and installation and lets us receive a share of income from any advertising.
The departure boards have been returned to:
- Loddon Bridge / The George, Earley
- Drome Path, Winnersh
- Winnersh Post Office
- Winnersh Crossroads (opposite Sainsbury's)
- Wokingham Broad Street (opposite former Post Office)
- Wokingham Broad Street (next to former Post Office)
- Wokingham Broad Street (opposite Broad Street Tavern)
