Not long left - Household Support Fund can help you
There’s more than £500,000 available to help Wokingham Borough residents through the Household Support Fund this winter. You can apply if you’re struggling to pay for:
- Food
- Bills
- Energy costs
- Other everyday essentials
The Household Support Fund has been allocated by the Department for Work and Pensions to councils in England to pass on money to residents who need it.
What you’re entitled to depends on your situation:
- Free school meal families - £15 per week, per child during the school holidays for each child receiving means-tested free school meals
- Pensioners, carers and disabled people – one off grant of £120
- All other households – one off grant of £60
The current round covers October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025. Do not re-apply if you’ve already got a payment recently.
If you successfully applied for a Household Support Grant between 1 April and 30 September 2024, you will automatically get another payment this winter. It will be paid six months after your last payment. You do not need to reapply.

Bright Futures Fund to support students
There’s money available to help students from low-income households take part in enriching extracurricular activities.
The Bright Futures Fund is being overseen by Wokingham United Charities, with funding support from us.
Funding is available for a wide range of extracurricular activities, including school trips, club memberships, sports equipment, instrument rental purchase and participation fees. From sports to arts, music to science clubs, the fund could be used for these things.
Applications must be submitted on behalf of families via schools, alternative educational providers, youth groups, sports clubs, activity clubs, and other relevant local charities within the Wokingham Borough.
Switch and save on your energy bill
The second round of the Big Community Switch is now open following the success of last year's campaign.
Registrations opened on Monday for the initiative, which helps people to make the switch to renewable energy.
The Big Community Switch uses the bargaining power of big groups to help secure lower prices. It is free to register and you will receive a personalised offer, with no obligation to go ahead.
The latest round of the Big Community Switch will run until Thursday 1 May. To find out more, visit the Wokingham Borough page on the Big Community Switch website.
