 Binning vapes causes fire
Every week, over 8 million vapes are discarded in the UK, which could have been recycled – that’s 13 every second!
All types of vapes are powered by lithium-ion batteries. If these batteries are binned, they can get crushed or damaged, potentially sparking fires in waste lorries and recycling centres.
Vapes also contain circuit boards which, if not disposed of properly, can leach toxic compounds into the environment as they degrade, harming biodiversity, soils and waterways.
Recycling vapes is easy
Like anything with a battery, vapes can and should be recycled.
Up to 80 per cent of materials in vapes is recyclable, like lithium, a vital material used in electric car batteries. Research shows that the number of vapes thrown away per annum could instead power 10,127 electric vehicles.
All kinds of vape pens or electronic cigarettes, including single-use or disposable ones, can be recycled as small electrical items at re3 recycling centres or in shops selling vapes. Use the online recycling locator to find your nearest recycling point.
Remember - don't recycle whole vapes at battery recycling points.
Reusable nappies save money and the environment
Using reusable nappies saves money for both parents and our communities.
According to the environmental action charity WRAP, by the time a baby is potty trained, the baby could use 4,000 to 6,000 disposable nappies. In comparison, a baby only needs around 20 to 30 reusable nappies.
Parents could save between £200 and £500 over two and a half years for their first baby, with even greater savings if re-used for siblings. Also, families using reusable nappies can, on average, halve the amount of their household waste, costing us less in disposing of our waste.
Lastly, reusable nappies are mostly made from natural fabrics, which are comfortable and gentle on baby’s skin.
Cashback for switching to reusable nappies
We offer a one-off cashback to parents who have bought reusable nappies valued at over £30.
Download and complete our application form, then email or post it back with the required documents. We will credit £30 to your bank account once your application is processed.
Please note, the cashback is issued per child (up to two years old), not per parent or household.
 Garden waste service reminder
Our crews have reported instances where brown garden waste bins aren't accessible, preventing them from being emptied.
If you're using our garden waste collection service, please ensure your brown bin or bags are placed:
- Beside or on the nearest public pavement, usually in front of your property
- In a position that does not obstruct access to others, including wheelchair users and those with pushchairs
- In view of our collection crews
Renew your garden waste service
We will contact you by email soon about renewing your garden waste collection service for the year starting 1 April. Stay tuned for more updates.
