Help shape our new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy
We are calling on people to complete a short survey that will help us create a place where everybody is welcome and communities are celebrated.
We have been talking with key partners and community organisations to gather feedback. We will be using this, along with survey responses, to establish a series of local objectives and priorities aimed at improving access to services and support across the borough for all.
The survey is open until Sunday 19 January 2025.
If you are an organisation which represents one of the borough's diverse communities and would like to get more directly involved in helping co-develop the strategy in the new year, or in supporting the other work the council does, please contact the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team at inclusion.team@wokingham.gov.uk.
Shinfield sports pavilion build hits final goal
A new sports pavilion and field at High Copse, off Hyde End Lane near Shinfield, have been built and are awaiting handover to Shinfield Parish Council.
The first football matches will happen next year as the pitches need 12 months to settle, while the cricket wicket should be ready in 18 months.
Most of the landscape planting and seeding has been done, and contractors will be maintaining the site to ensure the pitches and wicket bed in as expected.
It's hoped that the pavilion building will officially open at some point next spring.
These facilities have been built by the University of Reading as part of their obligations to serve new housing in the area.
We gave full planning permission last November, following consultation with residents and measures to offset the impact of traffic.
Safer families this Christmas
Incidences of domestic abuse rise over Christmas and it can be a time of intense pressure for these families.
We have information on our website about how you can support a friend or family member if you are worried they are experiencing domestic abuse.
Where families are no longer together, if safe to do so it can be helpful to try and make arrangements about where the children will spend their time as soon as possible. The following books may help you explain what is happening to younger children:
- Two Christmases by Sharon France
- What is Santa Can’t Find Us by Melisa Torres
- Last Stop on the Reindeer Express by Maudie Powell-Tuck
Families who are living with domestic abuse may find it helpful to talk through worries in advance with a domestic abuse specialist who can help put a safety plan in place.
Where you can go for help
