Wokingham Borough Connect
Gritting season has begun
Our winter service plan for highways has now begun and will be in place until the end of March 2025, setting out how we look after our roads during cold weather to keep them as safe as possible.
Roads in the borough are split across three tiers - primary routes, secondary routes and a 'third tier salting network' - which you can see in our winter service plan.
Primary routes will be gritted as a precaution based on information we get from the weather service, while secondary routes will only be gritted during particularly severe and hazardous weather conditions. Third tier roads will only be gritted after extreme snow.
Free bus travel starts this weekend
If you board a bus in the borough on Saturdays leading up to Christmas, you won't need to pay a penny.
All local services are included in the offer from providers Carousel Buses, Thames Valley Buses and Reading Buses.
You may need to pay for your return if your return journey starts outside of the borough.
We'll also be offering free travel on some bus routes for the Wokingham Winter Carnival and Woodley Christmas Extravaganza.
Bracknell Forest Council will be offering a similar scheme on the first three weekends in December with free travel on local buses on Saturdays and Sundays.
Buses update
Christmas bus timetables announced
Local bus providers have released their Christmas timetables, helping you plan ahead for any journeys you want to make over the period:
Disability Bus Passes
From Sunday 1 December anyone with a disability bus pass or a disability plus companion bus pass will be able to use borough bus services for free at any time.
There will be no change to senior bus pass, with the 9am start time remaining the same.
On all local bus services across England national concessionary bus passes can be used between 9am and 11pm Monday to Friday and anytime during weekends and bank holidays.
If boarding bus services outside of the borough, please check with the bus operator for any local arrangements before travelling.
If you think you maybe eligible for a senior bus pass or a disability bus pass please visit our transport and travel passes webpage.
Thames Valley Buses - Service 194
Service 194 run by Thames Valley Buses has recently changed to run through the new Bucklers Park development.
Buses from Bracknell now join Buckler Ride after leaving the TRL North Entrance bus stop and run through Bucklers Park with new bus stops near Ireland Road and Goodwood Crescent.
The bus will rejoin Old Wokingham Road just south of Hatch Ride. Coming from Crowthorne towards Bracknell the bus will follow this route in reverse.
Service 194 will no longer serve the bus stops at Pinewood Crossroads or TRL Western Entrance. There are no changes to the timetable with buses continuing to run every 30 minutes.
Phase one of footway programme complete
Phase one of our annual footway maintenance programme is now complete with a slurry seal laid on nearly 20 footways across the borough.
Slurry seal is a protective seal coat that extends the life of our footways. It is a thin, tough layer of asphalt emulsion blended with finely crushed stone for traction.
This is a cost-effective method to renew the footway surface and seal minor cracks and other irregularities.
Phase two will start in February, with planned sites published in the new year.
It is with great sadness that I tell you that the council’s executive member for active travel, transport and highways, and ward member for Winnersh, Cllr Paul Fishwick, passed away last night after a short illness.
Paul was respected by all who knew him for his expertise as a former highways officer; he had a truly encyclopaedic knowledge of the borough’s highways network and a real commitment to active travel and public transport.
All of us at the council, officers and councillors, will greatly miss Paul. He was polite, courteous, and well informed and always behaved impeccably in his dealings with everyone – officers, fellow councillors, and residents.
We have lost a friend and a valued colleague.
With great sadness,
Cllr Stephen Conway
Leader of Wokingham Borough Council
