Pupils get lesson in road safety
Pupils at Evendons Primary School had a visit recently from 'Kerby' and his friends at Volkers Highways to learn about keeping safe on the roads.
Throughout the sessions, children learnt about the rules of road safety, being alert for electric vehicles as they are quieter, not being distracted by things like phones when crossing, the importance of reflective clothing and about different types of crossings.
Kerby entertained the pupils by acting out the green cross code and revealing the answers in a game where pupils had to decide if they thought a situation was safe or unsafe.
Volker Highways are keen to work with more schools on topics such as road safety awareness, employability skill assistance and career fairs. If this is something you'd like your children and young people to be involved in, ask your school to contact Joshua.Kinge@volkerhighways.co.uk for more information.

Tan House Footbridge nearing completion
Works to replace the Tan House Footbridge in Wokingham are nearly complete after being halted earlier in the year and are due to open to the public in early November.
The installation of the new footbridge, which replaces two footbridges that cross the tracks behind the Carnival Hub, started earlier in the year however was delayed due to the steelwork fabricator appointed to build the steps going into administration.
At the moment, the bridge will provide step access only. We worked with Wokingham Town Council to try and push Network Rail to include ramps as part of the design, however while the company was willing to allow us to install ramps they were not prepared to put forward any financial contribution.
Because of the type of ramp that would need to be installed, the cost would be in the millions and at the moment neither the borough or the town council has the money to cover this cost.
The design used means the steps could be replaced with a ramp should funding become available and we hope that at some point in the future it is something we can work with Network Rail on.
SGN works on Church Road in Earley are now complete and the road has fully re-opened.
