 California Crossroads project almost complete
The California Crossroads improvement project at Finchampstead is nearly complete.
This is a forward thinking approach which has had great success elsewhere, providing a more pedestrian friendly environment where traditional highways methods were not suitable.
There will be an independent road safety audit once work is finished. There were two other independent road safety audits, in line with the Department for Transport standards, prior to work commencing.
The new layout is designed not only for functionality but also to enhance the appeal of the area. We would ask that all drivers, cyclist and pedestrians take extra care while everyone gets used to the new layout. All the usual Highway Code rules apply.
Drivers should give way to pedestrians, as per the Highway Code, but pedestrians should be sensible and wait for a break in traffic or for vehicles to stop before crossing. As per the previous road layout, we are expecting drivers to give way to the right.
Excellent feedback for youth justice service
Our Prevention and Youth Justice Service (PYJS) has received excellent feedback following a recent independent inspection.
The inspection recognised significant improvements have been made, rating the service as “good” overall, as well as identifying several outstanding features, including its staff.
Highlights include how children received a positive response from the service and its focus on the need of the child and not the intervention type.
His Majesty's Inspector of Probation explained how this ensures the child is placed first and there is a genuine desire in the service to create positive outcomes for children, their parents and carers.
In addition to singling out staff for their knowledge, enthusiasm and motivation, the service was rated as outstanding for the work in out-of-court disposals.
Our PYJS were also praised for how the voices of children and their parents / carers were used to help inform and shape how the service was delivered.
This included the new ‘Children Speak Freely’ panel, which is helping the team gain a greater understanding of the impact of their work on children needing support. The full review can be read on the HM Inspectorate of Probation website.
Survey with Sport England on keeping active
We are looking for your feedback about the exercise opportunities available to you, in order to help make improvements across the borough.
In partnership with Sport England, we are running a short survey that will help us to understand your views about physical activity, including what challenges you face in getting moving and staying active.
The survey also covers opportunities for children and young people and covers the leisure centre provision, as well as active travel. Responses will help us to identify any gaps that exist, as we strive to make sure everyone has the opportunity to exercise.
You have until Monday 21 October to share your thoughts, with all responses kept anonymous.
Illuminating night for charity at Dinton
The Glow Walk, organised by First Days Children’s Charity, is returning to Dinton Pastures this November.
On Saturday 16 November, from 5pm to 9pm, you and your family can immerse yourselves in a beautifully illuminated two mile course around Black Swan Lake, adorned with LED lights and glow-in-the-dark decorations.
There will be live music along the walk, and you can sign up for a special glowing stand-up paddleboarding session.
Hot and cold refreshments, including hot chocolate, hot dogs, burgers and mulled wine will be on sale, so you can bring something warm with you.
First Days is offering tiered pricing to make this fundraising event accessible to as many people as possible. You can contribute based on your own circumstances and how much you can afford. Grab your ticket before they sell out.
Help young people into independent living
Hosts are needed to provide young people aged 16 to 21 in the Wokingham Borough with accommodation. As a host, you’ll help a young person towards independent living in a safe and caring home environment.
Hosts are fully trained, supported and receive around £140 a week in financial compensation. Could you provide:
- A comfortable single room? Or a double room for a parent and baby?
- Emotional and practical support?
- Access to a shared kitchen, bathroom and living area?
If so, charity Step by Step, which we have recently awarded the contract to run the service, want to hear from you.
Visit the Step by Step website for more information or to register your interest.
