Wokingham Borough Connect
Crossroads now open
California crossroads are now open in all directions to all traffic, including buses which have returned to their regular routes. Work will be continuing at the parking bays, outside the shops, but Avery Corner car park is now open.
All the usual highway code rules apply at California crossroads. The ‘hierarchy of road users’ is a concept that places those road users most at risk at the top of the hierarchy.
We would ask that all drivers, cyclist and pedestrians to take extra care while everyone gets used to the new layout. Drivers will benefit from allowing additional space between them and car in front, who may be stopping to allow pedestrians to cross.

Night closures will continue throughout September, subject the weather conditions, to resurface the road and lay the road markings. These closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am.
Further details about the closure and the diversion routes in place can be found at one.network

How will things look once the works are complete?
Once the final overnight works are complete, pedestrians and road users will be able to see all the improvements that have been taking shape over the past few months.
All approaches will have a raised table crossing point in advance of crossroad junction. This is to ensure approaching vehicle speeds are reduced as they approach the junction.
Traditional circulatory road markings will not be installed. The leaf pattern design will be laid in a circulatory layout, to provide a visual sense of a roundabout.
There are crossing points on every arm of the crossroad junction and road users will need to give way to vehicles approaching from the right, in line with the highway code. There will be an additional raised section at the very centre of the crossroads.
No planned utility works allowed for three years
We have submitted a section 58 restriction under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. This allows a local authority to protect a street from any planned street works following any major surfacing works, except for emergency work and new connections.
We have worked very closely with utility companies and local businesses to try to mitigate the need for emergency works or new connections in the foreseeable future.
New drainage infrastructure has been installed as part of this improvement project. This links into the existing drainage network that has been reviewed and surveyed, with any required remedial work now complete. Virgin Media and BT also completed works to their assets located at the crossroads.
The restriction starts once the works are completed in September and will be in place for three years.
Thank you for your support and patience
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during this project.
The extended length of time scheduled for the project was to allow local businesses to remain open for the duration, as endorsed by residents in the public consultation.
We also thank local businesses for their understanding throughout this project and we hope those using the crossroads will see long term benefits of this improvement project for the local area.
Our next and final newsletter will be sent out once all the works are complete later this month.
