Last chance to have your say
Three of our consultations and surveys close at 11.59pm tonight, so you’ve got a few hours left to have your say on:
Celebrating one year of success at care home
Bluebell House Care Home in Wokingham celebrated a year of providing care for its residents with a party attended by Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Adrian Mather.
The council purchased Bluebell House in September 2023 to enhance the availability of high-quality, affordable dementia and nursing care within the borough, ensuring that residents can continue to live within their local community as their needs evolve.
During the past year, significant investments have been made to refurbish and update the building, creating a welcoming and inclusive space, with enhanced safety and care features.
Optalis has also taken steps to improve the care quality at the home, through dedicated efforts and improvements in all areas of care practice. Changes have resulted in improved feedback from residents and their families.
Because Optalis is council-owned, it means any financial surplus generated through its operations is returned to the council for further investment in local services.
Items seized at car boot sale
Two traders at a car boot sale in the borough on 11 August were found to be selling counterfeit clothes and illegal vapes after a visit by our Trading Standards officers.
One trader had around 480 items of counterfeit clothes seized that were from well-known brands and had a value of around £2,500.
Counterfeit products can reduce the demand for genuine items, which can cause many job losses in the industry. Counterfeiters will often pay poor wages and use forced or child labour and the profits from counterfeiting sales have been linked to funding organised crime and drug trafficking.
It’s estimated that counterfeiting costs the UK economy around £9 billion every year.
Officers also visited another trader who was selling illegal vapes, which exceeded the permitted liquid size, which is 2ml. Some of the vapes on sale were found to contain 18ml or more of liquid.
The clothes and vapes were seized and further enquiries are underway.
Could you help a young person into independent living?
Hosts are needed to provide young people aged 16 to 21 in the Wokingham Borough with accommodation. As a host, you’ll help a young person towards independent living in a safe and caring home environment.
Hosts are fully trained, supported and receive around £140 a week in financial compensation. Could you provide:
- A comfortable single room? Or a double room for a parent and baby?
- Emotional and practical support?
- Access to a shared kitchen, bathroom and living area?
If so, charity Step by Step who we have recently awarded the contract to run the service, want to hear from you.
Visit the Step by Step website for more information or to register your interest.
