Wokingham Borough Connect
Don't take risks on the railway tracks
Star Lane Level Crossing in Wokingham has been named by Network Rail as joint top for level crossing misuse between April 2023 and March 2024 on their Wessex route.
27 incidents of misuse were recorded at the crossing on Easthampstead Road in Wokingham, any one of which could have ended in serious injuries or fatalities.
The Wessex route includes towns and communities in part or all of the counties of Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Wiltshire.
Network Rail have compiled a montage video of CCTV showing examples of misuse and near misses which you can watch below.

Thousands step forward to Beat the Street
Over 14,000 people took part in this summer's Beat the Street, a game that awards points for exploring Wokingham Borough by walking, wheeling or cycling.
Players racked up a staggering 163,680 miles in total, the distance equivalent of more than 13 return trips from London to Tokyo.
They either used a contactless card or a smartphone app to check in at more than 100 "beat boxes" across the borough, all marked on a map.
About 6,200 people took part when we last held Beat the Street, so we're thrilled to have more than doubled participation.
This year's community winners were:
- Schools (total points) - Floreat Montague Park Primary School
- Schools (average points) - Westende Junior School
- Empowered schools (total points) - Addington School, Red Eagles
- Community and workplace teams (total points) - Redwood Early Years
- Community and workplace teams (average points) - Southlake Unofficial
- Running and cycling teams (total points) - Finch Coasters Running Club
- Running and cycling teams (average points) - Finch Coasters Running Club
- Small teams - Active4 Health
- Charity - Wokingham Foodbank
- Individual leaderboard (adult) - Max Polkinghorne
- Individual leaderboard (child) - JoyH
Beat the Street was run by Intelligent Health in partnership with our My Journey Wokingham active travel team, and funded by us and the Government.
Another chance to get out in nature
We've just finished building a new pedestrian and cycle path connecting two of the borough's nature parks.
The route runs through Hazebrouck Meadow at Arborfield Green and connects to its new counterpart at Hogwood Park, at the former Reading Football Club training ground in Finchampstead parish.
We carried out the work with funding that developers must pay towards community infrastructure as part of their permissions to build new housing in the area.
Our nature parks have been provided across the borough to give residents an attractive green space to visit while providing additional havens for our wildlife.
New signs help us walk around more confidently
We'd like to thank the Loddon Valley Ramblers for installing new footpath signs in various locations, helping residents walk around the borough more confidently.
The volunteer group, who we work in partnership with, have finished installing the new signs in Shinfield, Earley and Wargrave parishes, and are working hard to cover Arborfield and Wokingham Without parishes by the end of August.
The new signs either replace existing signs that are damaged or make clearer the routes of rights of way, so residents no longer need to worry about getting lost or trespassing.
The installations are funded by us, the Ramblers and Earley Town Council.
Volunteers make paths safer and easier to use
The Ramblers have also carried out improvement works to our footpaths that are in poor or dangerous condition over the last couple of months.
Kissing gates were installed at both ends of the footpath beside Shinfield Studio off Cutbush Lane to prevent inappropriate use of the path by cyclists.
In Wargrave, they repaired the stile on a footpath and re-decked a damaged footbridge near Scarletts Farm at Hare Hatch.
Over the years, the Ramblers have been helping us improve our footpath network, making the borough more walking friendly. Thank you for all the great effort!
