Wokingham Borough Connect
Longer travel times expected in Henley next week
People travelling to and around Henley next week should factor in more time, as the regatta is once more taking place in the area.
Established in 1839, the six-day event regularly sees more than 300,000 people attend.
The event starts on Tuesday 2 July and will finish Sunday 7 July and traffic and public transport is likely to be busier than usual.
If you’re planning on attending, we hope you have a great time. The area will be very busy so where possible, the train or bus is a good option to get there and back and you can see a guide to getting to the event on the Henley Royal Regatta website.
If you are getting a taxi on the Berkshire side of the bridge, please make sure you only use Wokingham Borough Council licensed vehicles to avoid the risk of getting into an uninsured taxi or from being overcharged.
Hurst Show and Country Fayre returns this weekend for its 35th year. Open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 29 June and 10am to 4pm on Sunday 30 June, there is plenty to enjoy including live music, dog shows, craft shows, arena events and lots more.
Throughout the weekend School Road will be closed with no access via Sawpit Lane and Tape Lane. A temporary one-way system will be in place on Church Hill. Visit one.network for more information.
Saddling up for summer fun at Bikeathon
More than 520 people took part in this year's Wokingham Bikeathon, which our My Journey Wokingham team are proud to support.
The event started and finished at Cantley Park in Wokingham town, offering four routes of between 15 and 51 miles plus a 2.5-mile Kidical Mass children's ride.
Finishers were awarded a My Journey branded medal, and the team were there all day to give sustainable travel advice and guide novice riders around the 15-mile route.
Visitors could try out the team's smoothie-making bike or pick up a reusable water bottle.
Lots of community groups were there including Sprockets Cycle Club, who ran a children's obstacle course, as well as Wokingham Cycling Club, the 1st Emmbrook Scouts, Thames Valley Police, Headway Thames Valley and more.
Congratulations to the Bikeathon organisers for another successful event, which was raising money for the Wokingham Foodbank.
Shute End car park available for voters
On Thursday 4 July, Shute End Eastern car park in Wokingham will be available for those voting at the Civic Offices to use.
Voters will be able to park for 30 minutes. A ticket will not be required, however a car park attendant will be on duty to direct voters and monitor use throughout the day.
 M4 weekend closure
National Highways are continuing works on the bridge between junctions 11 and 12 on the M4.
The upcoming closures are planned, with weekend closures to take place from 9pm on the Friday to 6am on the Monday and weeknight closures from 8pm to 6am:
- 28 June to 1 July - Westbound full weekend closure
- 1 to 4 July - Westbound overnight full closures
- 5 to 11 July - Eastbound overnight full closures
There are also some contingency dates planned should they need longer to complete the works.
More information on the works and a diversion route can be found on the National Highways website.
 Resurfacing update
Our annual road maintenance programme is in full swing and we would like to thank you for all your patience as the team work their way around the borough. The majority of the surface dressing now completed and the asphalt preservation and full resurfacing also started this week.
As with programme of this scale, schedules do sometimes need to be switched around and that is why we have our schedule live on our website. This is updated on a regular basis to ensure the latest information is readily available to you at all times.
You can see the full schedule of where we plan to be working, as well as frequently asked questions including access, reporting issues with roads and how we identify which roads need resurfacing on our resurfacing hub.
 California Cross progressing well
Works at California Cross are progressing well and we aim to re-open the crossroads by mid-August with temporary traffic lights in place after this with the majority of works to be finished by 2 September.
We then plan to work overnight to complete resurfacing and linings works in early-mid September.
Resurfacing works along Jubilee Road, from The Ridges to Avery Car Park, are due to be done by the end of August.
However with any project of this scale it is difficult to provide set dates as there are so many variables. As we saw in phase one things like the weather and the discovery of unknown existing pipework mean we need to adapt and make changes.
Our weekly newsletter gives the latest updates. You can see previous versions on our California Cross hub and sign up to receive them direct to your inbox.
SGN works in Earley and Wokingham
SGN are continuing works to replace parts of the gas mains across the borough.
Earley
B3350 Church Road
The works needed are expected to take longer than the six week school holidays so we've worked with SGN to start the project early, just after the school exams, to make sure the road is open for the new school year.
B3350 Church Road will be closed between Mays Close and Woodlands from 5 July for approximately nine weeks. This is later than originally planned to ensure access to polling stations for the General Election.
SGN will instead carry out works on Woodlands Avenue at the junction with Farringdon Road using temporary traffic lights. These lights will be removed before the road closure comes into effect.
You can keep up to date with the project on the SGN website and contact them directly on 0800 912 1700 or by emailing customer@sgn.co.uk.
Wokingham
Heathlands Road
SGN have now completed their works on Nine Mile Ride under temporary traffic lights and will be moving onto Heathlands Road.
The road will be closed between Easthampstead Road and Hatch Ride from 1 July until Autumn 2024.
The closure will be lifted on 4 July to allow access to polling stations for the General Election.
You can contact SGN on 0800 912 1700 or by emailing customer@sgn.co.uk.
