Wokingham Borough Connect
Thousands get active as summer game returns
More than 11,000 people have already joined this year’s Beat the Street initiative.
The community game, which encourages everyone to explore the borough by walking, wheeling or cycling, is already bigger and better than last time.
It covers more areas, with almost twice as many players as before. They've logged nearly 44,000, nearly two laps of the Equator, and should hopefully smash the previous tally of 151,000 miles.
They include pupils from Addington School in Woodley, who enjoyed a special guided trip when the game launched last Wednesday (5 June).
Beat the Street is free and suitable for everyone, so why not enter before it finishes on Wednesday 17 July.
How to join in the fun
You play by tapping a special contactless card on "Beat Boxes" across Wokingham town, Winnersh, Woodley, Twyford, Finchampstead, Arborfield, Hurst and Wargrave.
Just sign up on the website to get your free card and a map of all Beat Box locations. Alternatively, download the app for Apple or Android devices.
You then visit two boxes within an hour to collect your first points - and keep going from there. Prizes are available and you can sign up as a team.
It's run by Intelligent Health and our My Journey Wokingham team, and funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
 Free bike marking events
Thames Valley Police and British Transport Police have teamed up to offer free bike marking events. No need to book, just turn up.
Winnersh
The team will be at Sainsbury's in Winnersh on 14 June between 10am and 12pm. Take your bike along and have it marked and registered onto BikeRegister's online database.
Shinfield

Dr Bike will also be on hand to carry out safety checks on bikes.
 Resurfacing update
Our resurfacing programme continues next week, with over 100 roads across the borough included as part of the annual maintenance programme.
There are three types of planned road maintenance that are carried out in the borough:
Full resurfacing - an extensive treatment, which involves removing layers of a worn-out road surface and replacing this with new material.
Surface dressing - adds protection to the carriageway surface, sealing it from water while also enhancing its skid resistance. This protection can extend the life of the carriageway surface by up to 10 years.
Asphalt preservation - a preventative treatment, which adds protection to the carriageway surface. A bituminous sealant is applied to the road surface, which seals cracks and prevents pothole formation. This protection can extend the life of the carriageway surface by up to 5 years.
Upcoming works
Full resurfacing is due to take place overnight next week and will require full closures of:
- Bearwood Road
- Reading Road
- Wellington Road (patching works)
- Northway
Our surface dressing programme takes place on over 50 roads over the next week. Closures will be in place during the works, which generally take around two to three hours each.
The closures will not take place at the same time. The team carrying out the works will complete one road, re-open it and move on to the next.
Visit 'Looking after our roads' for the programme and more information about the maintenance of borough roads and visit https://one.network for roadwork and diversion information.
