Bins arriving in readiness for rollout
We’ve just started taking delivery of more than 60,000 black wheeled rubbish bins, which we’ll be issuing to households across the borough from Monday (20 May) onwards.
This is part of the upcoming changes to our waste collections, which will start on Monday, 12 August, and we expect to deliver to all properties by the end of July.
You shouldn’t use your new bin straight away, as we won’t empty it until collections change in the summer. For now, please keep putting out one blue rubbish bag a week.
When your bin arrives, we strongly recommend marking it with your house number to ensure it is returned to you when the new collections begin.
Each wheeled rubbish bin will come sealed with tape and will have a recyclable cardboard hanger reminding you not to use it yet.
From mid-August, we’ll empty your new black bin rubbish every two weeks and we’ll also collect recycling from the existing green bags every two weeks. You can pick up more free green bags if you need them.
Twyford Library set to turn a new page
The new Twyford Library will open its doors on Thursday 13 June at 2pm.
The library is moving from its existing, dated site off Polehampton Close, to a new home in the former Old Polehampton Boys School on the opposite side of the road.
The move has allowed us to create a beautiful new library space which benefits from features including high ceilings and large windows letting in natural light.
The building also includes a specially designed children’s area and a new extension, which offers an accessible entrance and additional space.
In order to move everything across to the new building, the existing library will need to close on Saturday 1 June at 12.30pm at the end of half-term. We’ll then start the process of packing up the books and resources, before moving them to the new hub.
Supporting even more people as they commit to quit
Wokingham Borough has the lowest percentage of smokers of any county or unitary authority in the entire country, but we are determined to help everyone who wants to give up smoking for good.
In the last 10 years, the percentage of residents who smoke has fallen from 12.7 per cent to 4.6 per cent.
A smokefree 2030 target was set out by central government in 2019, with the aim of achieving five per cent or lower. This means the borough has achieved this target six years ahead of schedule.
An ongoing partnership with Smokefreelife Berkshire, our stop smoking provider, has helped many people achieve their goal. Smokefreelife offers a range of support to those looking to quit, including one-to-one and group sessions, telephone appointments and drop-in clinics.
In addition to the local support available, you can find out more information on the NHS website, which has lots of tips and gives you the chance to create your own personal quit plan.
You can also download the NHS Quit Smoking app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to help you on your journey.
