New maths teaching centre makes it all add up
We're delighted to welcome Mathnasium, a maths learning centre with a growing presence across the UK, to Wokingham town.
The centre aims to build a strong foundation in numeracy for children of all ages and levels of experience by:
- Assessing each student’s current maths skills
- Creating customised learning plans tailored to their needs
- Providing personalised instruction and guided practice
Mathnasium accepts pupils from reception up to year 11, helping them grasp maths concepts in a way that makes sense to them. By helping them master the subject, it can boost their confidence and grow their love of learning.
Centre director Ray Yu says: "We recommend starting your children’s Mathnasium journey with a complimentary assessment, which is designed to identify any gaps in their knowledge.
"By understanding their strengths and areas for improvement, we can tailor a specific maths program that meets their unique needs."
Artistic map of town's businesses is launched
We were delighted to join artist Richard Young and guests, including the Deputy Borough Mayor Cllr Adrian Mather, at the launch of Wokingham's first artistic map.
Richard, who runs his gallery at Alexander Court in the town centre, has worked tirelessly to produce the folded map which highlights independent businesses and tourist attractions along the main roads into town.
The launch was timed to coincide with yesterday's Wokingham May Fayre, when thousands were expected to flock to the town and pick up a lasting reminder of how to get around (and where to shop!) on their next visit.
Speaking at the launch, Richard told us: "We created this map to raise awareness of a diverse selection of our independent businesses and attractions, both to residents and visitors to Wokingham town.
"Business maps aren’t entirely new, but they're still uncommon and ours is different, more artistic, interesting and attractive. We’ve also offered a brief insight into what makes this such a popular place to live, work and visit.''
You can pick up a copy of the map at independent businesses and hotel receptions in the town centre.
Challenge your colleagues to cycle to work
The annual Love to Ride Bike Month Challenge is running throughout May, offering businesses a fun way to meet their health and sustainability goals.
It can bring staff closer together with some friendly competition while saving everyone money on fuel or public transport costs.
It's free and really easy to get involved - all you have to do is:
- Download the app for Apple or Android, register for the challenge and join your workplace profile
- Ride and log as many journeys as you like - you can do as many or as few miles as you fancy
- Encourage others to earn points, as the workplaces with the highest number of points will top the leaderboards
There are amazing prizes up for grabs to anyone that takes part, regardless of their riding experience.
We fund Love to Ride through our My Journey Wokingham team as part of our commitment to promoting healthier and more sustainable travel.
This year's local government and Police and Crime Commissioner elections took place last Thursday, 2 May. You can see the results on our website.
Helping police to crack down on shoplifting
We want to hear from business across the borough that have a shopfront about their experiences of shoplifting.
We're working with Thames Valley Police (TVP) to get a better understanding of trends and recent incidents, which will help us identify:
- why some locations are targeted more frequently
- the potential barriers to reporting incidents of shoplifting
- any other opportunities to solve or reduce offences
Please take five minutes to respond to this survey by Friday, 31 May.
Shoplifting is also a key focus of the Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner’s Retail Crime Strategy, which was launched in January 2024.r
If you're affected by shoplifting, or worry about being targeted, TVP have produced some simple guidance on protecting your premises.
Advertising opportunities - join our waiting list
We’ll soon be opening up our email newsletters for advertising opportunities.
If you run a businesses you could reach more than 45,000 residents a month, who we contact across our series of Wokingham Borough Connect newsletters each month.
We’ll be launching this later in the year, with full details on reach, audiences and partnerships on offer. To find out more, hit the button below and we’ll get back in touch with you when we're closer to launch.
 Survey helps pinpoint economic trends
We're encouraging businesses to take part in a survey that helps to monitor and predict national economic trends.
The Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce's Quarterly Economic Survey has been running since 1989, with results sent to the British Chambers of Commerce.
The results have consistently reflected patterns in other sources of data, so they attract keen interest from policymakers like the Treasury, the Bank of England, the Office of Budget Responsibility, the EU Commission and the IMF.
You don't have to be a member of the Chamber to take part. Responses can be anonymous and you can skip questions that don't apply to you.
