Sailing courses for young people started
This year's sailing courses have started!
Led by our professional instructors from Dinton Activity Centre, the courses are suitable for young people of different ages and ability levels, even if they don't have any previous experience in sailing.
-
Junior Sailing Week is for ages eight to 13. Participants are able to progress through the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Youth Sailing Scheme, from beginner level to the advanced course for handling bigger boats.
-
Teen Sailing Week is for young people from 13 to 17. The programme works towards the adult RYA level one and two schemes.
-
Advanced Dinghy Sailing is for those who have completed the RYA level two or three scheme. Participants will learn to handle a boat like a seaman and work on advanced skills such as rudderless sailing.
The courses are run on a variety of dates and times during school holidays. Find out more and book your space online.
Walking in nature for well-being and good causes
Nature walks are not only good to our health, but also help the local charities.
Home to a variety of habitats and local wildlife, Dinton Pastures is the perfect place for you to get fresh air and relax whatever the season and the weather.
A Date with Nature
The Wokingham and Bracknell Local Group of Royal Society for the Protection of Birds organises a monthly 'A Date with Nature' walk at Dinton Pastures.
It includes visits to the bird hides by Lavell's Lake in the country park, where you can see and hear the birds without disturbing them. Advice will be offered to help new birdwatchers identify the different species.
The walks take place on the first Saturday of the month, with the next walk this Saturday (6 April). The walk starts at 9am in the main car park off Davis Street and finises by 12.30pm.
People of all ages are welcome. A donation of £2 per adult to the charity is requested.
Woodley and Earley Lions Sponsored Walk 2024
Woodley and Earley Lions Club is organising a fund-raising sponsored walk at Dinton on Saturday 24 April.
The event features a 5km route around the lakes in the country park; or if you wish, go for a shorter 3km route around the Black Swan Lake.
You can either raise funds for a charity of your choice, or the Woodley and Earley Lions.
The walk is open to all and is free for those under 12, with a registration fee of £5 for those aged 12 to 18 and £10 for 18 and above.
Visit the club's website to register and download a sponsorship form.
Tree-mendous achievement for borough primary school
Shinfield St Mary's Primary School has just finished planting 1,200 trees in collaboration with The Tree Council and with support from the Woodland Trust Emergency Tree fund.
Incredibly, the school have now planted over 5,000 trees on site since 2021.
We have been supporting the planting through providing saplings, mulch, guards, weed mats and stakes through our grant from the Woodland Trust Emergency Tree Fund.
It has been a collaborative effort, with the whole school involved in the planting, as well as working with community groups and organisations.
Recent planting has taken place elsewhere in the borough too.
At Bohunt School in Arborfield students joined in with planting 200 trees on the school site just before the Easter holidays.
A group of volunteers at Hatch Farm planted 940 trees while in Swallowfield, 770 trees have been planted at Van Demans in partnership with the parish council.
Thank you to all who have taken part so far - the planting season is drawing to a close so we will be sharing the final updates with you soon.
Help shape Berkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy
Do you want to get involved in shaping the Berkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy?
Local nature recovery strategy
To reverse the continuing decline of British wildlife, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has appointed 48 responsible authorities to lead on preparing a local nature recovery strategy (LNRS) for their areas to increase biodiversity and restore natural habitats.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is the responsible authority for Berkshire LNRS, supported by other local authorities including us.
Community workshops
Join a community workshop on Saturday 20 April at Maiden Place Community Centre (RG6 3HD) to find out more about the project and how you can support nature in the borough.
The workshop will be interactive and inclusive, with a range of presentations, small groups discussions and activities. There will also be an option of a walk around Earley Wildlife Corridor.
It's free to join and open to all residents, community groups, charities, businesses, schools and colleges.
Find out more and reserve your place online.
