Wokingham Borough Connect
Network Rail works begin tomorrow
Network Rail's closure of the Wokingham Station level crossing (Barkham Road) will start tomorrow night (26 January) from 10pm, with the crossing being closed until 4am on 19 February.
Next week Star Lane crossing (Easthampstead Road) will also close, with rail replacement services in mid-February.
These closures are to allow Network Rail to carry out the final stages of their re-signalling programme, which will see new equipment and a renewed track installed.

Have you had your say in our Local Transport Plan consultation?
Everyone who travels around Wokingham Borough is invited to share their views on a vision for a healthier, safer and more environmentally friendly transport network.
We are consulting on our revised Local Transport Plan, a “big picture” strategy that sets out how all kinds of provision will be offered in future, and where we should seek funding for improvements.
It aims to create opportunities for people to walk or wheel, cycle or take the bus or train for everyday trips, supporting the Government’s goal of making these the natural choices for shorter journeys and parts of longer ones.
The plan sets out to reduce congestion on the roads for trips where driving is needed, while reducing serious road collisions and making travel safer for everyone.
It aims to increase access to parks, leisure centres, public services and workplaces while reducing harmful air pollution and noise. This supports our aim of improving people’s physical and mental health.
Everyone can read the plan and respond at engage.wokingham.gov.uk until Friday 23 February.
Feedback from this consultation will be considered while making final changes and the plan could be adopted in late summer 2024.
Parking restrictions approved across the borough
New on-street parking restrictions are coming to almost 60 roads across the borough after requests from residents and councillors.
The restrictions were approved at an independent executive member decision meeting last week, where all proposals were approved with the exception of London Road which is to be amended to single yellow lines rather than double yellow lines and Colemansmoor Road where parking issues will be further investigated before a decision is made.
Following on from the call-in period ending - during which councillors can request that a decision is reviewed - the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will be sealed and a 'Notice of Making' issued.
A full list of the roads and restrictions are available on our webpage, as well as information including objections to schemes and officer response.
Did you know?
Just because you can't see someone working at roadworks, it doesn't mean nothing is happening.
There are a number of reasons that work might not be taking place despite areas of the road being closed. Here are just a few:
- When concrete and other materials, such new road surfaces, are drying, it takes time for them to reach the required strength in order for vehicles to drive or pedestrians to walk safely over it.
- Gas leaks can be fixed by spraying the inside of a main which takes time to dry before the main can be tested to ensure that the repair has worked. New sections of a main are pressure tested over a period to check for leaks.
- Parts need to be specially made in some cases and certain materials are difficult to get hold of.
- An area of the road may have been undermined by a water leak or a collapsed sewer and it is not safe to open the road to traffic as the road may collapse.
- On larger projects, work may be taking place elsewhere. The scheme may require works in nearby locations whilst other excavations are still open. One example is jointing electricity mains, as it’s not practical to always close the joint hole whilst other mains are being laid.
- Service connections require work on private property. For a private gas supply, there is the connection to mains in the road or footway but a connection is also needed in the property. It is not practical to reinstate the excavation whilst this takes place in case further work is necessary in the road.
- They may have left the site to collect additional materials or for a break, especially in adverse weather.
- When a new water main is installed, the new pipes need pressure testing and then chlorination. After 36 hours, a sample is taken to ensure it is safe to use. The site does not need to be manned during this period but it is inefficient to remove traffic management in case further work is needed.
This list is not conclusive of course, but covers some of the main reasons, especially that the gang may simply be having a break that they are legally entitled to take. They work in difficult conditions and this is important from a safeguarding perspective.
