Wokingham Borough Connect
Keeping you updated on California Cross works
Next month our project to improve California Cross for pedestrians and other non-motorists launches.
As each phase completes and a new one begins, we will feature it in this newsletter. However we know that there are some people who would like more regular updates, such as those who live, work, go to school or travel through the area.
We are launching a new newsletter 'California Crossroads project updates' which will bring you fortnighly updates on the progress, as well as ad-hoc notices if something happens we need to let you know about, such as emergency works on a diversion route.
To sign up to the newsletter, tap 'update your preferences' at the bottom of the newsletter, or visit our newsletter sign up page.
Network Rail to close level crossings and provide rail replacement service
Network Rail have planned closures to the Wokingham Station level crossing (Barkham Road) and Star Lane crossing (Easthampstead Road) to carry out the final stages of the re-signalling programme, which will see new equipment and a renewed track installed.
To carry out this work, level crossing closures and rail replacement services will be in place on the following dates:
Level crossing closures
-
Wokingham Station - closure planned from 10pm on 26 January to 4am on 19 February
-
Star Lane - closure planned from 10pm on 2 February to 4am on 19 February
Diversion routes will be clearly signed and can be seen by visiting the links above.
Rail replacement
Rail replacement buses will be in place from 11 February to 18 February.
National Rail recommend using their journey planner to find out the best way to travel during these times.
Planned industrial action
Industrial action is due to take place, including strikes and overtime bans, between 30 January and 6 February.
Please see the National Rail service page for more information.
Two events to close borough roads next month
Next month two big events are coming to Wokingham, bringing with them community spirit, fun, perserverence...and some road closures.
Lunar New Year
18 February from 11am to 3pm in Wokingham Market Place.
Wokingham Town Council is organising a special event to celebrate the Lunar New Year, with chinese music, performances, arts and crafts, delicious Asian street food and the traditional lion dance.
Denmark Street will be closed from 6am to 5pm to allow the event to take place.
Wokingham Half Marathon
25 February from 10am
Around 3,500 runners will take to the streets for Wokingham Borough’s biggest running event of the year.
Starting and finishing at Cantley Park in Twyford Road, the main race starts at 10am with the Wokingham Children's Mini-Mile starting shortly after at 10.15am.
Road closures will be in place on the route, which will circle Wokingham town centre before going up towards Shurlock Row, round past Hurst and back down to Cantley Park.
Closures will be in place along the route from 8am and will be lifted in sections as all runners are through. It is expected that the full route will be open by 2pm.
Helping you walk or cycle more in 2024
The New Year is a perfect time to bring in new habits. We want to help you make active swaps that will last all year round - and finding ways to swap your travel habits for healthier ones can be the first step.
Could your school run or work commute by car be replaced by a bike ride or walk instead? Maybe you could consider taking a rucksack for an essential shop run so you could cycle instead of taking the car.
Small changes to your lifestyle like this can benefit your health and count towards the NHS-recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week. You’ll also be able to save money on fuel costs and help lower carbon emissions in our borough.
Our website includes loads more top tips on making active swaps and we also run lots of regular events, including our Balance Bike Club and Learn to Ride sessions, to help children learn to ride safely and become more active.
