Borough roads among best maintained
Roads across Wokingham Borough were among the best maintained in the country in the last year, according to new data published last month by the Department for Transport (DfT).
The annual road conditions statistics, published in November each year, provide a range of data such as how much of the road network has had maintenance work on it and how much of it should be considered for maintenance work.
The statistics show that we carried out maintenance on around nine per cent of our A roads, compared to an average of around five per cent nationally.
For non-A roads, we did maintenance work on 4.5 per cent of our roads, compared to an average of around 2.5 per cent nationally.
Data is available for 119 local authorities for A roads and 118 local authorities for non-A roads, putting the borough well into the top 20 for maintenance work carried out on our roads.
The DfT statistics also show that roads in the borough are in better shape than the national average. With three per cent of A roads and motorways length needing maintenance work compared with four per cent nationally, and four per cent of B and C class roads length compared with six per cent nationally.

Road closure planned to cut down diseased tree
Part of Reading Road in Wokingham will be closed on 27 and 28 December to allow a diseased tree to be cut down safely.
The large oak tree in the grounds of St Paul's Church is sadly to be cut down following on from an inspection after a large branch fell at the end of August.
The inspection found the tree to be unsafe and it will now be cut down, leaving a small stump that can act as a habitat for insects and wildlife.
The road will be closed to traffic during the works, with pedestrian access maintained on the Holt Lane side of the road.
Phase one of SGN works complete
Phase one of the works to replace gas pipes on part of Nine Mile Ride in Wokingham Without are complete.
Following multiple leaks in the gas network, SGN are replacing the old metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes on Nine Mile Ride and at the junction of Old Wokingham Road and Nine Mile Ride.
Phase two will begin on Nine Mile Ride on Wednesday 3 January to replace the gas pipe network in the road between Old Wokingham Road and Palmer Close and will be closed in phases during this time.
