Last chance to have your say on future vision
We’re working alongside a host of partners to create a community vision for the borough.
This will set out what sort of place we all want the borough to be and what are the most important things we need to do to ensure a great quality of life for everybody in the community.
The groups want as many people in the borough to get involved as possible but we know different people will want to take part in different ways. There’s a longer and shorter survey so you can give your views.
The shorter takes just a few minutes. It’s your last chance to feedback as the surveys close on Thursday (30 November).
Thief caught on camera faces court
A thief has been brought to justice after we gave evidence of one of his crimes to the police.
The 20-year-old admitted two charges of stealing a push bike and five more of shoplifting, all in Wokingham town, where he lives, at Reading Magistrates Court on 7 November.
In one incident, he broke into a storage area at our Shute End offices at 5am on 10 June. He was filmed stealing a bicycle owned by our My Journey Wokingham active travel team.
We upgraded the store to make sure this didn’t happen again and passed our CCTV footage to Thames Valley Police, who recognised him and arrested him at home.
He also stole from the Co-op Food stores in Beechey Place and London Road on 19, 20 and 25 July, and 10 and 21 September, and stole a bike from the Carnival Hub on 2 June.
He got an 18-month community order and must do 200 hours' unpaid work, take part in 20 days’ rehabilitation activities and pay compensation. Get advice on bike theft prevention from Thames Valley Police.
Schools on board for Active Movement campaign
More children will be increasing their activity levels thanks to the return of the Active Movement scheme.
The programme is running for a third year, bringing a unique approach that has already inspired many schools in the borough by getting pupils to sit less, stand more often and move more as part of their everyday routine.
This comes after 12 schools took part in the 2022/23 programme, which saw children showing an increased desire to take up and play more sport.
Schools are still being recruited, but it is expected that at least eight schools will be benefiting from Active Movement during 2023/24.
As part of this initiative, the council has integrated other wellbeing services to work alongside Active Movement.
It will join forces with two other initiatives – Modeshift STARS and the Air Quality Project – as part of the My Journey Wokingham initiative, which is a borough-wide sustainable travel campaign that aims to help and inspire pupils to go to and from school by active and sustainable travel.
Children's reading challenge for Christmas period
We’re encouraging children to get involved with the Winter Mini Challenge, which asks them to read at least three books this festive season.
Organised by The Reading Agency, the challenge kicks off on Friday 1 December and runs until Monday 19 February. It will continue the ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ theme from the Summer Reading Challenge, which partnered with the Youth Sport Trust to keep minds and bodies active during the summer break.
This is a bitesize version of the main summer scheme, with children only needing to read three books to complete the challenge instead of six. It is free, entirely online and children can unlock rewards for finishing books, with lots of fun activities available on the dedicated children’s website.
If residents need help taking part in this challenge, staff at libraries across the borough will be happy to help by offering book recommendations and how to get the most out of the online resources available. Check your nearest library online.
