Spooky fun awaits at country parks
Are you ready for a Halloween adventure at Dinton Pastures?
Come try our Halloween Spooktacular Trail by the Black Swan Lake, and have some spine-thrilling fun!
From 21 to 29 October (9am to 5pm), you can get a trail map and activity sheet from Dinton Activity Centre reception for £2.50, and use the clues to help you hunt for ghouls, ghosts and other creepy creatures hiding in the bushes.
Once you're done with your quest, bring the activity sheet back to the activity centre reception or The Coffee House to collect a sweet treat by 5pm. Remember to get a map and activity sheet for each child, so everyone gets a treat.
The trail is just over 2km long and normally takes around 1 hour to complete. The paths are wheelchair- and buggy-accessible.
To have a quick start, make a booking online before you go.
Halloween party at California Country Park
Don't forget Jackson's Café at California Country Park will be holding a Halloween party on 26 October (Thursday), from 4 to 10pm.
There will be plenty of activities including a disco, best dressed competition and a 90-minute magic show by Fred in the Shed.
Tickets cost £15 per person, which include a buffet on the day. You can buy tickets now at the café or by calling the team at 0118 973 0776.
Try Walking Hockey at Cantley Park
Do you fancy trying a new sport or have you not played hockey for a while?
The South Berkshire Hockey Club is holding Walking Hockey sessions at Cantley Park every Thursday from 11am to 12 noon. Afterwards, the team will meet in the café for refreshments.
Whether you are new to the sport or not played for a while, Walking Hockey allows you to pick up a stick in a fun and relaxed environment with like-minded people.
Sticks will be available for use, but you may want to bring your own shin pads. Each session costs £5.
To sign up, visit the South Berkshire Hockey Club website.
Still time to book half term holiday club
There are still spaces in our half term Wild Days holiday club from 23 to 28 October at Dinton Pastures.
Designed for ages eight to 13, the holiday club offers two land or water sports in three-hour sessions, include fencing, indoor climbing, archery, raft building, kayaking, canoeing and more.
Each session costs £32 per person. Booking is made online.
Join the next Storytime
If you have young children aged two to five, bring them along to our next Storytime session at 11am on 17 October (next Tuesday) at The Coffee Deck of Dinton Activity Centre.
Tony Knight, a Wokingham rail station platform announcer famous with local commuters for his poetry and story readings, will jointly host next week's session with our libraries team. They will be reading stories and poetry to parents and children, and having fun activities together.
Entrance is free and no booking is needed.
Discover wildlife species at Dinton Pastures
Did you join the BioBlitz event hosted by British Entomological and Natural History Society (BENHS) at Dinton Pastures Country Park last June?
The society has recently released a report confirming over 640 wildlife species were found during the two-day event - what a remarkable result! Among them, moths, true flies and beetles were the most recorded groups of species.
It's just a small fraction of what we can find at Dinton! The society has been recording and sampling the wildlife in the country park over the years, and more than 700 species of butterflies and moths, 1200 species of flies and 400 species of beetles have been recorded so far.
No doubt there are many more species to discover, such as fungi which are likely to be present in significant numbers but still yet to be completely identified.
Next time when you are in the park, see if you can find any of them or other species.
