Free job fair to help you thrive in the workplace
We’re working with Department for Work and Pensions to organise a free job fair next Tuesday (26 September).
It's from 10am to 2pm, at Wokingham Town Hall (RG40 1AS). It's open to anyone, just turn up on the day – no advance booking is needed.
You will be able to browse roles in construction, transport, health, care and public administration sectors and some apprenticeships or training programmes will also be offered. Most of jobs are with local companies and organisations, so do not require extensive travel.
Several employment support organisations will be providing tailored career advice and guidance on training and upskilling.
Our teams will be there discussing and answering questions about apprenticeships and opportunities with us. Our adult education team will also be there to help you apply for local training courses to brush up your skills.
A complete list of employers and employment support partners attending the job fair can be found on our website.
Swap polluting miles for active smiles and win prizes
You could win prizes including a train trip to Europe and free gym memberships if you try sustainable alternatives to driving on World Car Free Day this Friday (22 September).
The borough-wide Love to Ride cycling challenge and the BetterPoints smartphone app, which automatically logs all green travel including walking, cycling, bus and train, are both offering incentives to help you see how simple, healthy and rewarding these can be.
On top of its month-long Cycle September challenge, Love to Ride has some special World Car Free Day prizes including memberships to the Move HQ gym at Winnersh. An electric bike and a £4,000 holiday are up for grabs throughout Cycle September.
Meanwhile, BetterPoints is offering a £100 prize draw, free coffee vouchers and the top prize of £800 towards a trip on Eurostar plus accommodation and spending money.
Our My Journey Wokingham active travel team hope you’ll see how much time and money you can save by walking, cycling or taking public transport instead. This will help reduce our borough’s carbon emissions and improve its air quality.
Celebrating Loddon Rivers Week
Loddon Rivers Week is back this week (18 to 24 September).
Led by South East Rivers Trust, it's an annual event to improve the health of the River Loddon.
This year's focus is to put 75 tonnes of gravel into riverbeds to create habitats for fish and other wildlife in and around the Loddon. You can get involved by taking part in their 'gravel seeding’ and other public events.
The River Loddon starts in Basingstoke and stretches across Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire before it runs into the Thames, just west of Wargrave. The habitats in the upper reaches of the Loddon are hugely valuable for biodiversity and home to brown trout, water voles and otters.
Three more breastfeeding friendly leisure centres
To coincide with National Breastfeeding Week (18 to 24 September), we're pleased to announce that three more leisure centres have committed to being ‘breastfeeding friendly’ venues.
Arborfield Green Leisure Centre, Bulmershe Leisure Centre in Woodley and Ryeish Green Sports Hub have all signed up to the commitment to welcome and support breastfeeding families.
Wokingham Leisure Centre at the Carnival Hub was the first of the borough’s centres to partner with the Breastfeeding Network (BfN) in August 2022, with Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Lower Earley following suit in March this year.
The status demonstrates a commitment to support infant feeding, including improving the environment for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding, which has multiple health benefits for the mother and baby.
