Cameras to improve road safety outside schools
We’ve installed automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras outside two schools to improve road safety.
We’ve been enforcing School Keep Clear markings outside schools since 2017, mainly with officers on the ground issuing Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) to vehicles, but with up to 60 schools in the borough, we can’t be at each school at drop-off and pick-up times.
A trial will launch at The Holt School on Holt Lane, Wokingham and Loddon Primary School on Hillside Road and Silverdale Road, Earley. As long as the trial goes to plan, we will look to roll-out ANPR to other schools in the borough.
School Keep Clear markings are in place to help keep children safe when travelling to and from school. Vehicles stopping in these areas can prevent a child from being able to see to cross the road safely or being seen by other road users.
The cameras will go live on 11 September and there will be a one-week period during which warnings rather than PCNs will be issued, for camera enforcement only. From 18 September, full enforcement will be in place and PCNs will be issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle.
Last chance to have your say: Street cleaning
This Sunday (10 September) our survey on proposed changes to street cleaning and grounds maintenance services will close..
With residents in the area getting significantly less funds from central Government per person than similar areas and the cost of poviding basic services increasing dramatically, it is not possible for us to continue delivering services as we currently are.
As part of the survey, we are asking for your feedback on proposals to change the frequency of road and footpath cleaning and larger scale cleaning of town centres, the A329M and A33.
Please take the time to read through the information and have your say before the consultation closes
£4,000 holiday up for grabs
A £4,000 holiday of your choice is just one of the prizes up for grabs this month, as Cycle September returns for another year.
More than 250 people across the borough are already taking part, with almost 10,000 miles clocked up in the first week.
Anyone can take part in Cycle September, from regular cyclists to new riders. So far, riders in the borough have saved enough C02 to charge nearly 42,000 phones or drive to Glasgow and back in an average petrol car.

Free bike repair stations across the borough
Did you know that there are points across the borough where you can repair your bike for free?
We currently have four repair stations that are easy to use and have a range of tools including screwdrivers, pumps, tyre levers, wrenches and hexagonal keys. You can find the repair stations outside:
- Carnival Hub in Wokingham
- Bulmershe Leisure Centre in Woodley
- Waitrose in Twyford
- The Bia Hub in Twyford
On top of each one is a QR code which links to step-by-step instructions on making simple repairs.
As well as the repair stations, we have two puncture repair stands in Wokingham town centre; one at Elms Field and one in Peach Place.
Three of the repair stations were installed using funding from Defra (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and one paid for as part of the town centre regeneration.
Emergency road closures
This week, part of Finchampstead Road has been closed due to emergency repair works.
At the end of last week, South East Water repaired a burst water main in the area, however a significant amount of damage had already been done to the road that needs to be fixed before it can re-open.
We have told South East Water that the road must be rebuilt by them as soon as possible. Due to it being unplanned it took them some time to get the resources, however works have now begun and providing no further faults are found, the road should re-open early next week.
