Have your say – litter bins, St Crispin's and more
There’s still time to have your say on two important consultations on services. Both close soon so don’t forget to have your say:
Future of ticket offices
Rail users are being urged to give their views on plans to shut station ticket offices in Wokingham Borough and beyond.
The Rail Delivery Group, which represents Britain’s train operating companies, is consulting on the proposals until the extended deadline of Friday, 1 September.
New mobile café is full of beans
We're pleased to announce that a new mobile coffee shop will be opening at our park at South Lake in Woodley today (29 August) – so be sure to pay them a visit.
Roro's Conscious Coffee is a family-run business that sources its products from ethical and sustainable suppliers, ensuring everyone involved is paid fairly. It also supports small businesses in the UK as its beans are roasted by another family firm based in Surrey.
As well as serving a range of coffees, tea and hot chocolate, owners Caroline and David will be offering a range of cakes and pastries alongside a few healthier options.
The couple launched the business following a 20-year City career because they wanted to focus on making the world a better place for their children - and we're very proud to support these values.
Their shop will be at the South Lake picnic area from 8am until 3pm on weekdays and you can find out more on their Facebook or Instagram pages and the Roro's Conscious Coffee website.
Volunteers wanted to help run libraries
If you are passionate about helping your local community, we are currently recruiting volunteers for our libraries in Arborfield, Spencers Wood and Wargrave.
Our library service has regularly used volunteers to help customers and we hugely value the passion and engagement that this brings.
Volunteers would be required to open and close site, undertake daily health and safety checks, shelve books and tidy. This role is a great way to engage with your community and you would be supported by our libraries team, with a minimum of six weeks training.
There will always be more than one volunteer on site to ensure you are supported and you can be flexible by choosing to volunteer weekly or monthly. Applicants must be at least 21.
Trainer thanked for getting thousands in the saddle
A cycle training co-ordinator who has helped thousands of residents discover the joys of riding is gearing up for a well-earned retirement.
Jill Bissell, who has worked on our My Journey Wokingham active travel team for 15 years, has seen us win national recognition for the high standard of our Bikeability schools training.
Since launching the scheme in 2010/11, all primary-aged pupils are now offered the chance to learn to maintain and control their bikes while riding safely alongside other traffic. In 2020, thanks to Jill’s efforts, won the Bikeability Trust’s Local Authority Partner of the Year award.
She is involved in numerous other activities including family rides, balance bike clubs, Learn to Ride sessions, cycle safety initiatives, community youth work and more.
Jill has also been praised for getting more women into riding as a British Cycling Breeze Champion, and in 2017 she was named 16th on Cycling UK’s list of the 100 most inspirational women in cycling.
We’re immensely thankful for her contributions, which have played a huge part in our aim of promoting active and environmentally sustainable alternatives to driving.
