Taste of Spain comes to Wokingham
We are delighted to say ¡Hola! to Salty Olive, an independent and authentic Spanish pinchos bar and restaurant, located in Elms Walk in the heart of Wokingham town centre.
Elms Walk is in the new Elms Field development, which is part of our multi-million-pound town centre regeneration project.
Borough Mayor Cllr Beth Rowland recently visited the restaurant and spoke to owner Susannah Stewart, staff members and diners.
Susannah has been a frequent visitor to Spain for over 40 years and fell in love with the Spanish informal and social approach to dining. It’s been her long-standing dream to bring this style of dining home to the UK.
Salty Olive offers delicious, freshly made Spanish pinchos (or pintxos). Pinchos are traditionally served as hot and cold small bites with big flavour and are designed to be shared. To find out more, visit the Salty Olive website.
New ANPR cameras to be installed this week
New automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras are being installed in hot-spots across the borough from this week, which will be used to capture the numberplates of drivers committing moving traffic offences.
Starting in September, drivers will receive a penalty charge notice if they fail to comply with road rules in the following locations:
- Broad Street, Wokingham at the junction with Rose Street - banned right turn
- Barkham Road rail crossing Wokingham, at the junction with Oxford Road - banned right turn
- Station Road, Wokingham at the junction with Station Approach - banned right turn
- Wellington Road Wokingham, at the junction with Station Road - ahead only
- Gipsy Lane, Wokingham - weight restriction
- Murdoch Road, Wokingham - width restriction, keep left
- Goatley Way, Wokingham - one-way street
- Milton Road, Wokingham - no entry except buses
- Easthampstead Road, Wokingham - yellow box junction
- Hyde End Lane, Spencers Wood at the junction with Fullbrook Avenue and Bolton Drive - buses only
- Whitlock Avenue, Wokingham - banned right turn
These are not new road rules, they were previously enforceable by the police, however last month the Department for Transport approved our application to take over these powers. This will help us keep the roads safer and reduce congestion.
Check your electoral details are up to date
Residents of Wokingham Borough are being urged to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.
The annual canvass allows us to keep the electoral register up to date, to identify those at risk of losing their voice at elections and to encourage them to register to vote before it is too late.
It is a legal requirement for the council to carry out the canvass every year and every household must ensure that the information is correct.
With elections taking place everywhere in the borough in May next year, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part.
This year’s annual canvass will take place from August to November in readiness for the publication of the revised electoral register on 1 December 2023. The council will contact some residents by post, while others will be contacted by email.
Watch out for scammers - keeping your info safe
Scammers are using phone numbers related to HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) to trick people to hand over money and personal information.
They are using numbers linked to the service, which we use for warrants to recover debts for outstanding penalty charge notices. Things to note are:

- They will not contact you using an automated message
- Always take a moment to stop and think before parting with money or your personal information
- Remember, it’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests
- Only criminals will try to rush or panic you
