Wokingham Borough Connect
Latest on resurfacing programme
Our team have been working hard to get back on track after all the rain we've had in recent weeks, which have caused a number of asphalt preservation works to be postponed.
Initial road maintenance works are currently taking place on Kilnsea Drive in Earley in preparation for resurfacing works that are due to take place early next year.
The team will be working overnight to resurface Lodge Road in Hurst on 19 to 20 August.
Any changes to the schedule will be posted on our Traffic and Traffic Facebook page, as well as on the advanced warning boards on site.
Details of the full resurfacing schedule can be found on our website. As always, works are weather dependent and subject to change but the signage on site of the works will display up to date information if changes do occur.
Watch out for scammers
Scammers are using phone numbers related to HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), who we use for warrants to recover debts for outstanding penalty charge notices, to trick people into handing over money and personal information.
HMCTS have given the following advice:
- They will never call asking for payment from 0300 0132 088 - this number is for inbound calls only
- They will not contact you using an automated message
- Always take a moment to stop and think before parting with money or your personal information
- Remember, it’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests
- Only criminals will try to rush or panic you
- They will never use ‘WhatsApp’ to contact users
What should I do if i'm suspicious?
Report all phishing emails, suspicious phone calls and text messages using the contacts below:
- Report suspicious text messages free of charge by forwarding the message to 7726
- Report suspicious calls to Action Fraud
- If you believe you have been the victim of a scam and paid money, report it to Action Fraudor call 0300 123 2040
- If you’re suspicious about a call you receive, you can call 159 to check whether you’re being targeted by scammers
New ANPR cameras to be installed from next week
New automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras are set to be installed in hot-spots across the borough from next week (21 August), to capture the numberplates of drivers committing moving traffic offences.
Starting in September, drivers will receive a penalty charge notice if they fail to comply with road rules in the following locations; the first six month is a warning for the first offence:
- Broad Street, Wokingham at the junction with Rose Street: Banned right turn
- Barkham Road rail crossing Wokingham, at the junction with Oxford Road: Banned right turn
- Station Road, Wokingham at the junction with Station Approach: Banned right turn
- Wellington Road Wokingham, at the junction with Station Road: Ahead only
- Gipsy Lane, Wokingham: Weight restriction
- Murdoch Road, Wokingham, Width restriction Keep left
- Goatley Way, Wokingham: One-way street
- Milton Road, Wokingham: No Entry except buses
- Easthampstead Road, Wokingham: Yellow box junction
- Hyde End Lane, Spencers Wood at the junction with Fullbrook Avenue and Bolton Drive: Buses only
- Whitlock Avenue, Wokingham: Banned right turn
These are not new road rules, they were previously enforceable by the police, however last month the Department for Transport approved our application to take over these powers. This will help us keep the roads safer and reduce congestion.
Rail disruption over the next two weeks
Those using the trains may face some disruption over the next fortnight, due to planned engineering works and ongoing strikes.
The engineering works will start this weekend and are part of the signalling upgrade programme, which has been running for the past four years and is due to finish in early 2024.
Further strikes are also planned on 26 August and 2 September, and you can get more information on how this will impact each train operator on the National Rail website.
Well deserved award for senior civil engineer
Congratulations to our senior civil engineer Angelica Posada Pulgarin, who has won the South East regional final for her presentation on biophilic design and civil engineering at the Emerging Engineers Awards.
Her topic on biophilic design explored how the natural and built environment can be combined, meeting the demands of society while being mindful of the impact of climate change and the wellbeing of those using the spaces.
The awards are aimed at student, graduate and trainee technician members from around the world, who are invited to submit synopsis papers to regional heats, with the final selection of three papers for the overall Emerging Engineer Award final in October each year.
The competition encourages and rewards the communication of civil engineering ideas, research and best practice in projects and design.
