Bin collections continue on bank holiday
Rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal on the coming bank holiday Monday (28 August).
Please note our crews will start an hour earlier at 5.30am, so be sure to put out your waste the night before to avoid being missed.
Have your say - street cleaning and litter bins
The consultation to have your say on the future of street cleaning and litter bins across the borough is now open.
We're currently grappling with the ongoing triple threat of high inflation, which leads to vastly increased costs, as well as growing needs among the community and a long history of inadequate funding from the Government.
With this in mind we are launching a consultation on how we could make much- needed savings.
This impacts areas such as street cleaning, grass cutting, litter bins and other services which will help us keep our finances stable and continue looking after those who rely on us most.
Back to school recycling tips
In less than two weeks, your children will be back to school. Have you started preparing for a new academic year? Here are some tips to help you beat the rush and save some money:
Reuse and recycle
Take inventory of the supplies at home, before you go school shopping. You may be able to find pens, crayons, pencil boxes and other supplies from last year that can be reused.
If you find any old pens that are no longer needed, you may be able to recycle them.
Terracycle runs a Writing Instruments Free Recycling Programme, which accepts different types of stationery like correction tapes and fluid pots, highlighters, felt tips, pens, mechanical pencils and more. Simply take your recycling to a participating drop-off point near you.
Swap to eco-friendly options
If new supplies are needed, try swapping to more eco-friendly options so that you can reduce the use of single-use plastic.
For example, refillable pens and reusable notebooks may last a very long time.
Besides, you can be crafty and turn your old denim jeans into a pencil case or use an unwanted mug as a stationery holder.
Donate unwanted school uniforms
First Days Children's Charity is still accepting donations of summer and winter uniforms for all schools, which are in good and clean condition.
You can make an appointment to drop off your items at First Days headquarters at Molly Millars Lane, Wokingham (RG41 2QZ). Alternatively, you can put them in one of their orange or pink donation bins at various locations in the borough.
First Days has a school 'one-stop shop' in their Elevate centre (RG40 2AZ) for families in need to choose and try on uniforms and other school items. Last year, they helped over 1,000 children with school uniforms, saving families over £350,000.
Find out more about this meaningful project on the First Days website or by contacting them direct.
