Donate unwanted school uniforms
If you have any unneeded or outgrown school uniforms, you can now donate them to First Days Children's Charity.
The local charity is accepting donations of summer and winter uniforms for all schools, which are in good and clean condition. First Days told us that items currently needed most are girls' shirts and trousers (secondary), uniforms with school logos (primary and secondary) and school shoes for all ages.
You can make an appointment to drop off your items at First Days headquarters at Molly Millars Lane, Wokingham (RG41 2QZ). Alternatively, you can put them in one of their orange or pink donation bins at various locations in the borough.
First Days has a school 'one-stop shop' in their Elevate centre (RG40 2AZ) for families in need to choose and try on uniforms and other school items. Last year, they helped over 1,000 children with school uniforms, saving families over £350,000.
Find out more about this meaningful project on the First Days website or by contacting them direct.
Did you know?
Can I recycle shredded paper?
Yes, but don't just toss it loose in your green recycling bag.
Put the loose shredded paper in paper bags, envelopes or cardboard boxes before recycling, so it won't slips through the sorting machines at the recycling plant.
To save money, why not reuse your shredded paper as an alternative to polystyrene packing chips? Newsprint or other non glossy paper is also safe to use as mulch or add to your compost heap.
Next Repair Café
If you missed last Sunday's repair café, you can take your broken household items to the next one at Lambs Lane Primary School (RG7 1PW) on 20 August (Sunday).
Billie Bachra, who launched the initiative at Spencers Wood Village Hall last May, has recently moved it to the nearby primary school because it has more space.
The repair café at Lambs Lane Primary School will be run on the third Sunday of the month, from 10am to 1pm. Their expert volunteers will try their best to fix your broken items or offer advice on what can be done to get them up and running again.
The service is free, but donations are welcomed to cover repair costs and support initiatives to reduce waste and engagement with young people.
To find out more, email Billie at billie@spencerswoodrepaircafe.co.uk. If you want to take part as a volunteer, please get in touch with her.
Meanwhile, the repair café at Spencers Wood Village Hall will continue as normal on the first Sunday of every month.
We're lucky to now have two in our borough and encourage you to visit to reduce your waste.
Recycle hard plastic waste
Hard plastic recycling is now a permanent service at re3 recycling centres in Reading and Bracknell.
A wide range of hard plastic items are accepted, such as plastic buckets, crates, bins, storage boxes, garden furniture, pipes, toys and plastic plant pots.
Hard plastic waste collected is recycled at facilities in the UK and Europe, where it is turned into 100 per cent pure raw materials for producing construction materials, furniture, household items and more.
Donate suitable items for reuse
Meanwhile, if your unwanted hard plastic items are in good condition and can be reused, take them to the Reuse Area at the recycling centres.
The national charity Sue Ryder will collect and resell these items in their shops to benefit people in need of care.
