Free activities for children to enjoy this summer
The Holiday, Activities and Food Programme is back, bringing your school-aged children free activities during the summer holidays for those entitled to benefits-related free school meals (or who have been referred by someone working with the family).
Primary-aged children will receive a voucher to sign up to summer camps, which are held at schools across the borough.
Secondary-aged young people have a choice of up to 12 fun days, with activities including gaming, mini golf, water sports, orienteering, forestry and a trip to Thorpe Park.
For those with special educational needs and disabilities, weekly stay and play sessions will be taking place, as well as a picnic in the park, days out at Camp Mohawk and new for summer 2023, drop-off sessions including activities such as arts and crafts, sensory play, outdoor play and toys and games.
Don't forget, if you are in receipt of benefit-related free school meals, you can apply for vouchers of £15 per child, per week of the school holidays through our Household Support Fund.
Join Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers at Elms Field
Free performances of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet are being held in Wokingham this weekend.
Join Bart Lee Theatre for the stunning production at Elms FIeld on Saturday 5 August, with the 80-minute show starting at 11am and 2pm.
The performance captures the essence of the story, while also aiming to tell it in a way that is accessible for all and suitable for a family audience. Bring chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy the show.
Meet dogs making a huge difference to people's lives
Come and meet guide dogs and their owners at Wokingham Library on 15 and 31 August.
Drop-in events are being held from 10am to 12noon to give you the chance to find out more about the work of The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which is the world's largest breeder and trainer of working dogs.
There is no need to book and all ages are welcome, so just come along and meet some wonderful dogs and find out how they help their owners.
Fun day from charity that helps abandoned horses
A family fun day is being held at Cantley Park in Wokingham, hosted by a charity that rescues horses and ponies.
The event, organised by SAFE, runs from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 5 August and entrance is £2 per adult and free to those under 16.
Come and enjoy donkey rides for children, a funfair, inflatables and meet the SAFE ponies. There will be a licensed bar, a tea and cake stall and BBQ, as well as live music.
Founded in 2014, SAFE is a small charity on a mission to support local landowners to legally rescue and rehome abandoned and neglected horses in the Berkshire and Surrey areas.
Last chance to take part in Dinton Summer Series
The fourth and final instalment of the Dinton Summer Series is taking place on Thursday 10 August at 7pm.
Organised by Barnes Fitness, competitors have the option to run in a 5km or 10km event at Dinton Pastures Country Park.
Your time will be chipped and your result will be available as soon as you cross the finish line, with trophies for the top three in different categories.
The 5km event is one lap of the flat course and those who feel like testing themselves can go around a second time for the 10km option.
It costs £21 to take part in the 5km race and £23 for the 10km race. If you want to sign up for all four events, it is £76 for the 5km series and £84 for the 10km series.
Let's colour in: Get creative with artist Chris Holley
Calling all seven to ten-year-olds to a fun art session where they can colour in, cut, collage and paste with artist Chris Holley.
The session, which costs £3, is being held at Wokingham Library on Tuesday 8 August from 11am to 12noon. Parents and carers must stay with their child throughout the session and registration is required.
If you are unable to attend on this date, there is another session running on Tuesday 22 August from 11am to 12noon.
