Sign your child up to Wild Days summer holiday club
Due to popular demand, we have added more places to the Wild Days summer holiday club at Dinton Pastures Country Park in Hurst.
These spaces for August are now open for booking if you want to sign your children up for one of the half-day sessions.
Wild Days is designed for children aged eight to 13 years old. In each session, they take part in two different land or water-based activities, such as indoor climbing, archery, raft building and paddleboarding.
Take to the floor with free dancing lessons for children
Do you want to learn a variety of dance moves from different cultures? Selected libraries in the borough are hosting fun sessions for children where they can do just that.
Sessions are suitable for children aged six to 11 years old and take place at:
- Lower Earley Library, Thursday 10 August, 11am to 12noon
- Woodley Library, Tuesday 15 August, 2pm to 3pm
- Wokingham Library, Saturday 26 August, 11am to 12noon
It costs £1 to take part. Places must also be booked in advance. To find out more and to book, visit our library events website.
Empowering you to feel comfortable with breastfeeding
August marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 to 7), a campaign that aims to inform, anchor, engage and galvanise action on breastfeeding and related issues.
The theme set by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action for this year is enabling breastfeeding by making a difference for working parents.
In the last year, we have made great strides to make breastfeeding easier and give families confidence.
Both Wokingham Leisure Centre at the Carnival Hub and Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Lower Earley have gained 'Breastfeeding Friendly' status from The Breastfeeding Network.
The network offers free non-judgemental advice and information to breastfeeding women and parents in the borough.
Is your bike tired? Book a slot for expert advice
Make sure you are ready to cycle around the borough this summer by taking up a free check from Dr Bike.
He will be offering his advice to make sure your bike is roadworthy. If there are any parts needed, or it is beyond the scope of the session, he will let you know and give you some advice and options to get your bike ready to ride.
Sessions are being held on:
- Wednesday 26 July, 10.30am to 12.30pm, Bulmershe Leisure Centre, Woodlands Avenue, Woodley, RG5 3EU
- Thursday 27 July, 10.30am to 12.30pm, Dinton Pastures Country Park, Davis Street, Hurst, RG10 0TH
Booking is required and can be done on the My Journey Wokingham website.
Pedal on smoothie bike
Use your pedal power to make your own refreshing and healthy smoothie on My Journey Wokingham's "smoothie bike" outside the Carnival Hub in Wokingham.
Meet the team from 1pm to 3pm on Monday 7 August to take your turn on the bike, which has been named Pedalicious following a competition among residents.
Enjoy the sunny weather safely during summer holidays
We are really looking forward to seeing our parks and open spaces being well used during the summer holidays. However, while you are enjoying the hot weather, remember to take precautions and look out for others as well.
The heat can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable people, such as the elderly and young children, so look out for friends, family and neighbours who may need extra support.
Spending too long out in the sun can cause heatstroke, so plan regular breaks, stay hydrated and find shade. You should also be sure to apply sun cream and remember the importance of water safety.
There are lots of top tips for coping with hot weather on the NHS website.
