The final countdown is on until the Coronation of King Charles III.
As you are busy preparing for the celebration, we want to share with you, in this special issue, some tips that can help make your Coronation party or event more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Before your party or event
Decorations
-
Avoid single-use: decorations are often one of the biggest sources of party waste. Try to swap those made out of plastic with reusable and recyclable alternatives, such as felt chains or flower garlands.
-
Make your own: the Eden Project Communities website has great ideas on how to make your own bunting, pompoms and paper chains. This can be a fun activity before or during your event.
Food and Drink
-
Bring your own plates: remind your guests to bring their own cutlery, plates, bowls and cups, so that you can save using single-use paper or plastic versions.
-
Pop-up food caddies and recycling bins: having them on site will help participants recycle as much as they can while enjoying the party. You can also get some kitchen food caddies ready for people to put in scrape leftovers and uneaten food.
-
Try alternatives to cling film: use food storage containers, beeswax wrap or reusable silicon lids to store or wrap food, instead of cling film which can't be reused or recycled.
After your party or event
Clean up
-
Bring leftovers home: encourage your guests to bring some food storage boxes and take leftovers home after the party. You may also suggest them to visit the Love Food Hate Waste for practical leftover recipes.
-
Reuse decorations: organise some people to take down the decorations to save them blowing away or falling apart and becoming litter. You can store them for another party if they are in good condition.
-
Recycle as much as possible: the online Recycling Locator tool helps you find out what to recycle where. You can put out most of the recyclable waste on your collection day.
Bin collections continue as normal
Your rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal on the Coronation bank holiday (Monday 8 May).
Our crews will start earlier at 5.30am on that day, so be sure to put out your waste the night before to avoid being missed.
