Service update
Your rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal on the upcoming bank holiday Mondays (1 and 8 May).
Our crews will start an hour earlier at 5.30am on both days. To avoid being missed, please be sure to put out your waste the night before.
Sign up to garden waste collections
Last year, we collected around 10,300 tonnes of green materials, the equivalent of more than 850 double-decker buses, and turned them into compost for growing other plants.
Using our garden waste collection service is not only great for the environment, but also convenient for anyone with a garden. Simply do your gardening, pop the waste into your garden waste bin and put it out for collection every two weeks.
If you sign up for the first time, you will be given a 240-litre brown wheeled bin for storing garden waste.
For more details including cost and how to order the service, visit our website.
Did you know?
Can I recycle fruit and vegetable nets?
Yes. Fruit and vegetable nets can be recycled at supermarkets with soft plastic recycling facilities.
You may also consider reusing or repurposing them, like putting homegrown fresh herbs in a net bag and hang it until the herbs dry out. Do a search online and you will find loads of creative ideas to reuse your fruit and vegetable nets.
Adopt the street you live in
Would you like to help make a difference to your neighbourhood?
We've recently talked to Shelagh Flower, the coordinator of the 'Woodley Adopt a Street Project' (WASP), a community initiative that helps keep the town a pleasant place to live and visit.
No pressure for everyone
"They just do as much as they can. There is no pressure for everyone," said Shelagh.
The WASP volunteers can choose when and where they litter pick. Most of them adopt the street they live in, or the footpaths or green space near their houses. They pick up the litter in the area they've 'adopted', bring it home and put it out on their collection day together with their own waste.
Established in 2011, WASP now has about 200 volunteers from different walks of life, such as retirees, full time workers and families. They all care about their community and share the same passion of keeping Woodley clean and tidy.
For a stronger sense of belonging, Shelagh gives each volunteer a high-visibility jacket with 'Adopt A Street Volunteer' printed on the back.
Be part of your local community
Rachel Burrow joined WASP in 2017 with her son and partner, when they moved to Woodley.
"Litter picking is a good thing to do because it creates a better environment for people and animals. I also want to be part of the local community," said Rachel.
Rachel and her family have adopted the lane where their block of flats is located. They spend about three hours per month on litter picking. "We enjoy being outside together, especially when my son was little," added Rachel.
Apart from keeping your local area clean, children can learn about the importance of looking after the environment through litter picking.
How to join
If you live in Woodley and want to join WASP, email Shelagh direct.
WASP is just one of the many 'Adopt a Street' groups in our borough. They always welcome volunteers to join them out and about. Contact your town or parish council if you are interested.
We also run a borough-wide 'Adopt a Street' scheme, which you can take part in no matter where you live. At present, we have over 800 members. We are grateful to have all these community-minded residents who spend their time and and effort in making an impact on our environment.
If you want to join them, complete this form and email it back to us. All volunteers will be given a litter picker, green 'Adopt a Street' bags to store litter and a high-visibility jacket.
