Wokingham Borough Connect
Cheaper bus fares for the simplyReading bus zone
Did you know Reading Buses now offer cheaper day tickets in the simplyReading zone, covering Woodley, Earley, Lower Earley and part of Shinfield parish?
This covers all other operator services within Reading. You can find out more about how it works, and how it's funded, at the Reading Buses website.
We encourage everyone to travel by bus where possible as these important services need your support to stay viable. You can find out more about sustainable travel in the borough through our My Journey website.
We're doing all we can to help our borough's supported routes and have revised our Bus Service Improvement Plan to help attract funding to make them even better.
Additional funding to help maintain our roads
We've been allocated a much-needed boost to our highways maintenance funds. Central government announced in its budget yesterday that the borough would be allocated £589,200 of the additional £200million for highways maintenance in 2023-2024.
This additional funding comes at a time when, like all local government organisations across the UK, we're facing huge financial challenges to ensure vital services are protected and you receive the help and support you need.
You can report problems, such as potholes, damaged street lights or even an obstruction in the road on our website using our 'report it system'.
Our map based highways reporting system is a simple way to report issues with the roads quickly and we can even update you on the progress of your query if you choose to leave your email address.
 Rose Street works to begin
Works to install a crossing point on Rose Street, near its junction with Broad Street, will begin on Monday (20 March), removing the island currently in place to enforce the width restriction. This will be replaced with dropped kerb extensions on both sides of the road, reducing the crossing distance. Priority will be given to vehicles travelling from Broad Street along Rose Street, with vehicles travelling in the other direction waiting at a new give way line that will also be installed.
In the past, residents have raised concerns over the safety of pedestrians waiting on the width restriction when crossing the road, as well as vehicles driving around the width restriction on the wrong side of the road.
A public consultation last Summer showed 70 per cent of respondents were in favour of the proposed changes.
The section of Rose Street affected, from the junction of Broad Street to just before the Wokingham Methodist Church and the Bradbury Centre, will be closed from Monday 20 March until Friday 31 March.
Following immediately on from this, Rose Street will be closed in its entirety on Monday 3 April and Tuesday 4 April for resurfacing, during which time parking for residents and visitors will be suspended.
During the closure, vehicles travelling from the Reading side of town along Reading Road and Shute End, including buses, will be diverted down Rectory Road. Bus stops on that side of the road on Broad Street will be suspended and the bus stop on Rectory Road will be used as an alternative while the works are carried out.
Children's bike classes for all abilities
Balance bike training
Did you know our My Journey Team run a free club for 2-4 year olds to learn, practice and have fun balancing and gliding on two wheels.
This offers a great first step in preparing them for riding a bike when they are a bit older. Sessions are currently taking place at FBC Centre in Finchampstead on Wednesdays and Woodford Park Leisure Centre on Thursdays.
Bikeability training
Our partners at Avanti Cycling will also be running Bikeability courses during the Easter Holidays at Woodford Park Leisure Centre for older children in year 5 to 9. Prices range from £10 for level 3 (one day course ) to £20 for level 1 to 2 sessions (two day course).
Visit our My Journey website to find out more about dates and times available and to book your child a place at the next session.
