Free road closures to celebrate the coronation
It’s almost time for the biggest national event of the year which will see many borough residents and local communities throw street parties, decorate their homes with bunting and participate in various fun events to celebrate The Coronation of His Majesty The King.
We are making it easy for residents living in cul-de-sacs and roads to hold street parties by waiving road closure charges during the coronation bank holiday weekend of 6, 7 and 8 May 2023.
Residents and community groups normally have to pay to cover the cost of road closures (for the signs, diversion routes and admin needed) but the council is dropping this fee for the coronation weekend.
If you would like to hold a street party, applications are open until 16 April. We will be sharing a list of road closures nearer the time.
Fare play Government offers more bus funding
The Government has extended its support for our bus services for three more months after we lobbied ministers on the issue.
The Department for Transport is investing a further £155 million in its nationwide Bus Recovery Grant, Local Transport Fund and subsidised £2 cap on selected fares, so these are all available until 30 June to help operators recover from the impact of coronavirus.
We welcome this, as we recently wrote to transport secretary Mark Harper arguing the original deadline of 31 March was too premature to cut off this vital support.
We’ve also extended our own financial support for subsidised routes, which was also set to expire on 31 March, until 31 August. We’re inviting bids from operators to run these services for another three years and have revised our Bus Service Improvement Plan to help get external funding.
Passenger numbers are slowly approaching pre-covid levels but times are still tough for operators, with costs like fuel, maintenance and staffing all rising. Please use these services wherever you can, to ensure they’re still there when you and future generations need them.
How could we help you get there quicker?
You've only got until this Sunday (12 March) to answer some simple questions on how you get around the borough as we prepare to update our main strategy on providing and maintaining transport links.
Our revised Local Transport Plan, which will replace the current one when it expires in 2026, will cover roads, footways, cycle lanes, public transport and more with an even greater emphasis on active and sustainable travel
There'll be more detailed consultation before it's published, but we really want to hear from you at this early stage to ensure it accurately reflects the community's needs and wishes from the outset.
We're really pleased with the number of responses we've already had, but there's always room for more and we're particularly keen to hear more from younger people and those living in the borough's rural north.
