Local pupils artwork unveiled at Gorse Ride
Artwork created by school children at Nine Mile Ride and Gorse Ride Schools has been unveiled at our flagship regeneration scheme at Gorse Ride in Finchampstead.
As part of an initiative to bring the community together we, along with our contractor Wates, organised art sessions for local children to take part in. These included autumnal themed artwork of leaves and hedgehogs and self-portraits.
The artworks are mounted on boarded fences around the Gorse Ride construction site and will stay up throughout this phase of the regeneration, transforming the community into a place where local people can be proud to live, work, grow and study
The regeneration will see 249 new modern homes built, with 75 per cent being affordable to meet growing local demand. The new homes will be energy efficient with high levels of insulation and low carbon innovations like air source heat pumps to help reduce emissions and make them more affordable to heat, tackling the fuel poverty crisis whilst helping to reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.
Well done to the Wokingham half marathon runners
It was another successful year for the Wokingham Half Marathon, with thousands of people taking part in the race and many more cheering on from the sidelines on Sunday (26 February).
While it was a sell-out for the main race, there was also a great attendance for the Wokingham Children’s Mini-Mile.
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Caroline Smith was delighted to hand out prizes to the winners and to see such a wonderful turnout for the event.
Scott Cousins was the fastest adult, completing the half marathon in one hour, five minutes and ten seconds. Lauren Reed was the quickest female runner on the day, reaching the finish line in one hour, 14 minutes and 14 seconds.
It was a dead heat in the children’s race, with both Jasper Legg and Elliott Langley-Aybar achieving the same time of five minute and six seconds. The fastest girl was Grace Drummond, who crossed the line after six minutes and 26 seconds.
A big well done and congratulations to everyone who took part in the race.
Watch 'Being there to support Ukraine' video
A year on from the invasion of Ukraine, Chris Wright from our Ukraine support team has written and performed a song about the he and his colleagues offer.
Hundreds of Ukrainians have moved to the borough in the last year, supported by dozens of amazing local families.
Many are now bedding into the community, living independently and happily in Wokingham Borough. They’ve been helped along the way by our incredible hosts and our Ukraine support workers like Chris.
Still time to donate to support community
More than 200 residents have donated almost £14,000 which will mean almost £42,000 will be going directly to organisations across the borough that support people on low incomes who are struggling.
High bills and high prices are forcing more people to reach out for this support. Your donations will mean more people can get the help they need.
There’s still time to donate and, remember, for every £1 you give, Wokingham United Charities, Berkshire Community Foundation and us will provide an extra £2, rounding your £1 up to £3.
