Wokingham Borough Connect
 Half-term rail replacement service
Network Rail will be carrying out engineering works on the railway line between Bracknell and Reading next week.
There will be no trains running between 13 February and 17 February and a rail replacement service will be available for those needing to travel.
Easthampstead Road level crossing and road closure.
Network Rail will be carrying out works and improvements to Star Lane level crossing on Easthampstead Road this month, which will mean the road will be closed at the crossing.
The road will be closed from 11pm on Sunday 12 February and will re-open on Friday 17 February at 10pm.
Included in the works will be:
- Replacing around 40 new sleepers and ballasts
- Installation of a new cycle friendly veloSTRAIL level crossing surface
- New tarmac and road markings on the roads either side of the crossing
During the works, the road will be closed to traffic and diversions will be in place.
Pedestrian access will remain on a temporary walkway (unless barriers are down).
London Road bridge works to begin
Temporary traffic lights are planned for London Road, Reading, until May, as Network Rail begins work improving the 1917 railway bridge.
Work will run from Monday, 13 February to Tuesday, 9 May.
The nature of the work means the structure will be hidden by scaffolding and a sheeted covering, to stop paint and debris from escaping the worksite.
The 106-year-old bridge over London Road, which carries the line between Wokingham and Reading, needs new paint to stop the structure from rusting.
The temporary traffic lights will mean that traffic can still travel during the works, but people should plan longer for their journeys.
 Who's digging now?
Did you know that of the more than 5,000 street works that take place in Wokingham Borough each year, about 75 per cent of them are utility companies?
Above ground, our roads and footpaths are how we move around our communities, but below the surface, they play an important role in delivering services to households and businesses.
Under a typical road in the UK run many services connecting buildings to utilities, such as:
- Water
- Sewage
- Gas
- Electricity
- Internet cables
The utility companies need to be able to maintain their existing underground equipment, as well as install new. When utility companies need to carry out work, this will either be planned or emergency work.
Planned work (such as maintenance, new customer connections or upgrades) requires the companies to apply to us for a permit. We can then choose to grant or refuse the permit, or ask them to amend their request.
Emergency work, however, cannot be planned for. Utility companies do not need to apply in advance to carry out emergency works, but they do have a duty to let us know within two hours of the works starting.
We monitor street works, but with more than 5,000 carried out each year we can't be everywhere at all times. If you are concerned with any safety of the works taking place, please call (0118) 974 6000.
