Show support for half marathon and mini-mile runners
The Wokingham Half Marathon and Wokingham Children’s Mini-Mile are taking place on Sunday (26 February). Show your support and cheer as the runners make their way through the course.
The half marathon gets underway at 10am, with the mini-mile following at 10.15am.
It is estimated there will be around 3,000 runners taking part in the main race, with the event starting and ending in Cantley Park. The mini-mile route is on the border of Cantley Park and will see children earn medals of their own.
As part of the new route introduced in 2022, the half marathon now passes through Wokingham town centre, which is another good place to show your support.
Full details of all road closures are available on the Wokingham Half Marathon website, along with event information, frequently asked questions and parking information.
Providing a supportive environment for breastfeeding
Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Lower Earley has become the latest venue in the borough to be recognised as ‘breastfeeding friendly’.
Through our ongoing work with the Breastfeeding Network (BfN), a national charity, we are continuing to give families confidence about breastfeeding.
Last year, Wokingham Leisure Centre @ Carnival Hub gained the same status as part of the network’s Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.
The Wokingham branch of the BfN offers free and confidential face-to-face help through peer support volunteers, with sessions held across the borough. It will soon be looking to train new volunteers for a peer supporter course, starting in March, which will be open for applications soon.
To book an appointment or video call, or to enquire about training with the BfN, contact wokingham@breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk
New classes added at BXGFit for juniors and adults
Junior intermediate boxing
This class is a great chance for children aged 12 to 16 to have some fun, learn some of the technical elements of boxing and improve session by session. Moving on from the beginners class, intermediate takes it up a notch. Technique will be key, especially if you want to one day take your skills into the ring. Refine your movement, guarding, punch power and technique. The juniors intermediate class runs 4.40pm to 5.30pm on Wednesdays.
Adults intermediate boxing
The gym has also added a second adults’ intermediate class for all those looking to work on their boxing skills with the idea to eventually work up to technical sparring. Now on Tuesdays at 6 pm and Wednesdays at 7 pm, this is a great chance for participants to advance their skills and take themselves to the next level.

How could we improve your local journeys?
Do you enjoy walking or cycling around the borough? We are seeking your views to help us make this safer and easier.
Your views will guide our updated Local Transport Plan, a strategy document outlining how we maintain and improve footways, cycle lanes, roads and other routes. For a better idea, have a look at our current version which runs to 2026.
This will offer more ways of getting around and more chances to leave the car at home, especially for shorter journeys, which is essential as we strive to reduce air pollution and congestion and tackle the climate emergency.
During this initial engagement, which runs until Sunday 12 March, we’re asking your thoughts on things like more support for electric vehicles and cycle parking, or providing more space for pedestrians on pavements in village and town centres.
This will be followed by more detailed consultation, but we’d like you to take part now so the draft reflects your wants and needs from the outset.

Vaccination offer ends after success of programme
The offer for Covid-19 vaccinations changed from Sunday 12 February, which marked the end of the national autumn booster campaign.
It was also the final day that 16 to 49-year-olds who were not considered to be at risk, and who had only received a primary course, could get a booster.
The change came as a result of updated guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, which recommended the booster offer ended, in line with the current autumn booster campaign, thanks to the success of the programme.
The NHS will continue to operate a smaller scale Covid vaccine programme for those at high risk. We will help to publicise details as they become available.
