Your blue bags are coming soon
Blue general rubbish bags for this year will start being delivered to all houses in the borough from next Monday, 6 February
Each house will receive a roll of 54 blue bags, covering the period between April 2023 and March 2024. You can check the delivery date of your blue bags on our website.
If you live in a flat and have a bin store with a wheeled or a 'grunden' style bin for rubbish, you can use any plastic bags, because blue bags will not be delivered to flats having this arrangement.
Together with the blue bags, there will be a new leaflet from us providing useful information on how to recycle more and waste less.
We know most of our residents (especially those who receive this newsletter) have been doing a great job in recycling, but we hope this leaflet will become your handy reference during the course of the year.
Due to the huge financial challenges we are facing, we're reducing the number of blue bags for each household from 80 to 54 per year, and we will no longer supply food caddy liners.
The changes have enabled us to avoid adding an additional £269,000 to our budget, while encouraging recycling and reducing the amount of single-use plastics in the borough.
This year, we continue to receive the least funding from central government per resident of any unitary authority in the country - about £30 million below the national average. We are under tremendous pressure to find savings to continue providing support to our residents in this difficult time.
Did you know?
'Did you know?' is a new column of this newsletter, which aims to demystify different aspects about your waste and recycling.

Can I recycle used envelopes with plastic windows?
Yes, envelopes with windows can be recycled.
You don't need to remove the plastic windows before recycling. They will be separated during the recycling process.

 Don't dump it, donate it
When you are having a clean-out, it's tempting to dump everything you don't want in the rubbish.
Donating unwanted items supports charities and local organisations, and reduces the amount of waste being incinerated or sent to landfill which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
Household waste recycling centres
You can take your unwanted items to re3 household waste recycling centres in Reading and Bracknell, so that they can be re-loved, re-homed and re-used.
A wide range of items are accepted, from books, CDs, toys to bikes, sports equipment, stainless steels taps, sinks or basins. You can find a list of wanted items on the re3 website.
Any unwanted reusable items should be dropped off at the Reuse Area at the recycling centres.
Donated items are collected by Sue Ryder for sale in their shops, if they meet the minimum criteria set out by the charity.
re3 is also working with Precycle, a local recycling company specialises in collecting items that are sold for reuse either in the UK or more usually, abroad.
Recycle your running shoes
You can pop into one of the leisure centres managed by Places Leisure in the borough and drop off your unwanted running shoes in the donation box there. Even if your shoes are no good to be reused – you can still donate them rather than letting them sit in landfill!
JogOn works with its partner to distribute them to 11 destinations around the world. For shoes unsuitable to be used again, JogOn will have them shredded and incinerated for energy or used for resurfacing playgrounds.
JogOn's mission is to remove one million shoes from landfill.
