There’s now less than a month to go on our consultation on the future of waste and recycling collections.
More than 6,300 residents have had their say on the potential switch to fortnightly collections, wheelie bins and other ideas to run the service more efficiently.
This is your chance to shape the future of the service you likely use most from us.
Mobile vaccine centre next week
Mobile vaccination centres will be opening temporarily across the borough to help protect communities against Covid-19 in the weeks ahead. Vaccines remain our best protection against severe disease and hospitalisation this winter.
The key advantage of these mobile clinics is that booking is not required and you can just turn up on the day.
The next mobile clinic is being held on Monday 14 November at the Wokingham Community and Charity Hub in Erftstadt Court (postcode RG40 2YF). This will run from 10am to 4pm, with parking available in Denmark Street (usual fees apply).
The NHS team will be providing the adult booster dose. This is for anybody aged 50 or over, pregnant women, people in a clinical risk group, and frontline health and social care workers. It is also suitable for anybody aged 16 or over who has only completed their primary course.
If you are thinking of attending, please bring your NHS number and wear a face covering.
Wokingham Shute End vaccine clinic
These mobile clinics are in addition to the regular ones being held at the Wokingham Borough Council offices at Shute End (postcode RG40 1BN) on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Full details of the clinics can be found Covid-19 webpages.
If you are using the clinic at Shute End, it is advised you book in advance, although walk-ins are available depending on capacity.
Bid for cycle link between Twyford and Charvil
A new traffic-free walking and cycling route could be built between Twyford and Charvil if a funding bid by us is successful.
We want to improve its active travel links as part of a wider pledge to tackle air pollution and the climate emergency, so we’re seeking a multi-million pound contribution towards the scheme from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
This would go towards a 1.4km off-road route between Twyford railway station and Charvil via Charvil Meadows, a popular and scenic grass meadow off Old Bath Road and the River Loddon, which is one of our country parks.
The path would run parallel to Bath Road and provide alternative access to the station and Twyford town centre for many people who don’t have a safe, direct way of walking or riding there.
Busy half term for young Ukrainian guests
Child and teenage Ukrainian guests had a busy half-term, with activities provided across the borough giving them a chance to get out and about, have fun and make new friends.
The Holiday, Activity and Food (HAF) programme enabled primary-school aged children to spend up to a week at holiday camps, where they could take part in sport, arts and crafts and play together. For secondary-school aged, they had three local days out, going bowling, pottery painting and clip and climb.
There was also a fun day open for all at the Oakwood Climbing Centre, where it was sometimes difficult to know who was enjoying themselves more, the case workers or the children! Part of this was funded through our Chance to Thrive scheme for young Ukrainian refugees.
We have more activities in the pipeline for the Christmas break, as well as a new Ukrainian community group coming in early 2023, so keep an eye out for more information coming soon.
Buses impacted by driver shortage
Buses serving Wokingham borough and surrounding areas could be cancelled at short notice, so please check before travelling.
Reading Buses and its sister operator Thames Valley Buses have warned of possible disruption caused by an ongoing national shortage of drivers, compounded by the recent serious fire at Slough bus station.
They've thanked their teams for working extremely hard to keep as many services running as possible and apologised for any disruption, which they're doing all they can to minimise in partnership with us and other authorities.
They're prioritising essential journeys like the first and last of each day and at school times, while avoiding cancelling consecutive trips on the same route. In the long term, they're also making every effort to recruit more staff. Full details of affected routes are updated daily on its website.
Reading Buses is recruiting drivers if you are interested.
