A true taste of the Caribbean comes to Woodley
A celebration of Black History Month is being held in Woodley on Saturday (12 November).
There will be a taste of the Caribbean, with delicious food and a range of performances for guests to enjoy. The event is being held at Woodley Baptist Church in Hurricane Way from 7pm to 9.30pm.
There is no need to book and the event is free and open to all - just show up on the day and find a seat.
The evening will include:
- Singing
- Dancing
- Spoken word
- Poetry
All performances will have local connection and celebrating African and Asian heritage. The seated event will have an interval so guests can enjoy the food.
The event is being organised by Jeff Hinds, Chairman of the African Caribbean Society, a member of the borough’s Residents Equality Forum, with support from Wokingham Borough Council.
Charity concerts to open Carnival Hub cultural space
Our flagship new community space, the Carnival Hub in Wokingham, is set to show its cultural credentials as it hosts two fantastic concerts in aid of the new Wade Dementia Day Care fund on Saturday 19 November.
Music fans will be spoilt for choice with an afternoon of big band music from The Official Glenn Miller Orchestra UK and celebrated director Ray McVay.
This will be followed by an outstanding evening of entertainment from ‘Ultimate Elton and the Rocket Band’ and ‘The Police Academy’.
Profits from the events will go to new Dementia Day Care fund at Wade Day Care Centre, Wokingham, which helps offer daytime dementia respite care facilities to support the local community.
Celebrating 35 years of Lower Earley Library
We are holding lots of fun events to mark the 35th anniversary of the opening of Lower Earley Library.
The library celebrates its birthday on Wednesday 23 November and there are lots of ways to get involved during the coming weeks.
Coming up on Tuesday 15 November, the library is hosting an eighties reminiscence session from 10.30am to 11.30am. There is no need to book, so just drop in and take a trip down memory lane.
On the same day, we are running our usual Rhymetime session, where we will be singing some celebratory rhymes alongside our usual favourites. The session runs from 10am to 10.30am and booking is required for this.
Paul Windley, who runs the 'Memories and Issues of Earley' Facebook group, will be presenting a selection of photographs of Earley from the last 100 years. This event is being held on Friday 18 November from 10.30am to 11.30am and no booking is needed.
There is a charity quiz and raffle on Tuesday 22 November, where all proceeds will be donated to Alexandra Devine Children’s Hospice and the Borough Mayor's chosen charity, Wokingham Foodbank. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Booking is essential via Lower Earley by calling (0118) 931 2150 or by emailing libraries@wokingham.gov.uk with 'Lower Earley Quiz' in the subject heading. This is a cash only event.
On Thursday 24 November, there is a party and charity coffee morning at the library from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Share memories of the library and enjoy tasty homemade cakes. All proceeds will go to Wokingham Foodbank. Just drop in. This is a cash only event.

Disco fever! Join CLASP for its Christmas party
Get your dancing shoes on because CLASP Wokingham is having a Christmas disco on Tuesday 6 December from 6pm to 8pm. The event is being held at the Bradbury Centre in Rose Street, Wokingham.
It costs £5 per person, which includes a snack and a drink. Tickets must be bought in advance by Friday 25 November.
CLASP is a self-advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities in Wokingham Borough. It holds regular events throughout the year, including singing, swimming and Pilates. It also invites in guest speakers for 'Take Notice' sessions, which help raise awareness for a particular topic.

History Wardrobe presents: A Wartime Christmas
Join us at Woodley Library on Wednesday 30 November to discover the delights of simple pleasures, including warm clothes, homemade gifts, decorations and delicious food.
Christmas during wartime shines a light on companionship, connections and making a little go a long way. Find out what to wear to dazzle by candlelight, how to sweeten your Christmas pudding and what treats might be in your stocking.
The event runs from 7pm to 8.30pm and it is £8 to attend, which includes a festive refreshment. Booking is essential and please pay directly at Woodley Library before the event. Doors will be open from 6.30pm.
Sign up to an in-person mental health event
Mind in Berkshire (Oxfordshire Mind) is running a free meeting for voluntary community sector (VCS) organisations or groups which is aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing for Wokingham Borough residents.
The next Wokingham Mental Health and Wellbeing Community Alliance takes place in-person at Waterford House Charity and Community Hub in Wokingham on Thursday 17 November from 2.30pm to 4pm. The event is free to attend, however spaces are limited and booking up fast.
The aim of the Alliance is to improve the experience of people living in Wokingham Borough accessing mental health and wellbeing support through responding collaboratively to identified needs in the community.
