Wokingham Borough Connect
I like to move it move it
Following on from previous success, Active Movement will be supporting an additional eight primary schools to walk, cycle and enjoy all kinds of physical movement this school year.
Those that took part last time reported levels of activity increased across the school, with more participation in other sports as well.
From 31 October to 25 November this year, children from participating schools will take part in the programme’s Active Journey campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of time spent in cars, with activities including a walking bingo challenge.
Every child will receive a bingo card and each time they complete one of the active journeys featured, they can cross it off. Once they have completed all nine, they hand it into their school to be entered into a prize draw, which features a scooter and lots of other great rewards.
The Active Journey campaign is supported by our public health team in partnership with My Journey Wokingham. This is a borough-wide sustainable travel campaign that helps and inspires residents, employees and students of all ages to travel actively.
It is hoped this will result in reduced air pollution across the borough, especially outside schools when there is increased traffic for drop-offs and collections, while helping us honour our pledge to do all it can to address the climate emergency.
By encouraging active travel and seeking to provide more amenities like crossings or cycleways over the coming years, we hope to address inequality by offering access to more affordable ways of getting around.
Driving in wet weather
Driving in wet weather can be hazardous, with nine out of ten weather-related deaths and serious injuries on the roads taking place in the rain.
We've gathered some advice from the Highway Code and the Met Office to help you be better prepared for those soggy journeys.
Be prepared
- Stopping distances will be at least double than on dry roads as your tyres have less grip on the road
- If you can, choose main roads, where you are less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris and flooding
- If heavy downpours are expected, avoid starting your journey until it clears
Visibility
- Keep well back from the vehicle in front. This will increase your ability to see and plan ahead
- Be aware that the rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen
- Even moderate rain can reduce your ability to see and be seen. A good rule of thumb is ‘if it’s time for your wipers, it’s time to slow down'
- Use dipped headlights if visibility is seriously reduced
- Keep your eyes peeled on the road at all times as spray from other vehicles can suddenly reduce your visibility. Remember it affects others too, so anticipate their actions and be prepared
In an emergency
- If the steering becomes unresponsive, it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road. Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually
Flooding
- If the road is flooded, turn around and find another route. The number one cause of death during flooding is driving through flood water, safest advice is turn around, don't drown.
- Although water may seem shallow, just 12 inches (30cm) of moving water can float your car, potentially taking it to deeper water from which you may need rescuing
- Flood water contains hidden hazards which can damage your car, and just an egg-cupful of water sucked into your car's engine will lead to severe damage
- Avoid walking through floodwater, even shallow moving water can knock you off your feet
- Keep children and pets away from flood water - it contains hidden dangers such as heavy debris, sharp objects, open manhole covers, sewage and chemicals
- You can sign up for free flood warnings
Pupils ideas take root
Pupils from Class 6CB at Gorse Ride Junior School got a surprise visit from Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Caroline Smith and representatives from Wates Residential, to announce they had won a competition to name new local roads.
The new roads will form part of the regeneration of Gorse Ride in Finchampstead, with local schools challenged to submit ideas for themes that linked to the local area, its landmarks or concepts which were important to young people such as climate emergency.
A community panel shortlisted the ideas down to three and local residents of Gorse Ride were invited to vote for their favourite theme. The theme ‘Flowers’ proved the most popular choice, receiving 57 per cent of the vote.
The theme ‘Flowers’ included ideas such as buttercup, sunflower, iris and foxglove, and now the theme has been chosen we will start the process of discussing the ideas with Royal Mail before agreeing a final list of road and apartment names.
